Did a developer steal this woman’s camera?

July 14, 2005
I wonder if there is anything that can be adapted from Witness - http://www.witness.org/ - the organization (Peter Gabriel is involved) to put video technology in the hands of people to record human rights violations. You could imagine a similar effort to buy many disposable cameras and place them near hiking trails or adjacent to developments and encourage people to document what they are observing. Take the cost of the device out of the equation, and get the numbers of users way up and teach the…

San Francisco garter snakes snack on California red-legged frogs

Not to mention that the zoo's Joe Fitting, quoted in the article, and shown in blurry focus behind a snake in one of the pictures (a prominent picture in the print edition), is a Coastsider!

Devil’s Slide Tunnel groundbreaking scheduled for Friday, May 6

May 04, 2005
According to the HMB review, the party at the restaurant is invitation-only. The 2pm ceremony is at Graywhale Cove - but it's not clera if THAT is also invitation-only.

Sign a petition at Caffe Lucca to save Montara’s back yard

June 21, 2005
Two months later, I wanted to share an observation about the petition - I know it was being distributed elsewhere as we were approached by a young man while walking our dog one day and have also seen them posted around town. In fact, there was a plastic box screwed to a tree on Elm St. in Montara (across from the horse ranch) that has long since run out of petitions, and the clear plastic front has been smashed into many sharp pieces which are lying on the ground. It's ironic that the effort to preserve…

Gotta Dance Studio presents a Dr. Seuss musical

(and that's a typo, of course - not Suessica but Suessical - too bad I can't edit comments after posting 'em)

Gotta Dance Studio presents a Dr. Seuss musical

April 17, 2005
Two bits of fact checking for you, admittedly don't really impact the community announcement aspect but for accuracy's sake The name if the musical is "Suessica" - there's no Dr. in the title - in fact, its full title is "Suessical the Musical." And the musical was on Broadway in 2000. Recent, but not quite brand new...

Postal truck robbed at Montara post office

Thanks for making us aware of this story - this is terrible. Awful for the driver, awful for the community.

“Montara: A Pictorial History” helps you see the town through new eyes

January 08, 2005
I've only flipped through the book, but I was pretty disappointed with the quality. There were photographs where the aspect ratio was noticeably off. Other images were actually photos of photos - where the original image remained in a frame while a snapshot of it was taken. The frame could still be seen, in what seemed to be sloppy cropping. Again, I didn't spend a lot of time with it, but quickly seeing visual indications of sloppiness didn't endear me any further to the publication.

Comcast goes for third price increase in two years

November 25, 2004
Part of the horror on the coastside is just how bad our service is. Bad picture quality, unreliable service, fewer available channels, worse-than-normal-for-Comcast customer support (it took them months to get the name on my bill correct, despite numerous phone calls), and what I strongly suspect is MUCH higher prices than in other parts of the Bay Area. Their justifications don't really apply to us, do they?
