Cunha returns to old schedule, cancels buses

September 16, 2006
(continuation of my previous comment) An SF-based architecture firm which has won awards building schools and public buildings expressed a desire to participate in the process of making proposals to design the new middle school; their first estimate of a budget range was quite a few million below the current numbers Dr. Bayless is saying he will spend. CUSD board member Roy Salume was unable to get the current board to insist on an open process of bids and selections, because Dr. Bayless long-ago…

Cunha returns to old schedule, cancels buses

September 16, 2006
Mr. Skelton, I appreciate your good humor. My apologies for not realizing you were at the meeting at which the CUSD board decided on the parcel tax measure, and BRAVO for speaking in support of including busing. And I wasn't suggesting the videotape for the reason of seeing me speak, but rather for the reason of seeing the absolute bull-headedness of the Ken Jones-era board members, Jolanda Schreurs (leader) and Dwight Wilson (follower). The other three board members really did speak in support of…

Cunha returns to old schedule, cancels buses

September 16, 2006
Mr. Skelton, I certainly understand your assertion that parents must take complete responsibility for their children when you say (in effect) "too bad about busing, or anything else - you must get them to school on time, properly fed, clothed, etc." But I do not understand how you make your case for there being no maneuvering room inside CUSD's budget for any busing at all (besides, of course, the busing they still provide). All you have done is to point to a total dollar figure and a comparison…

Environmentalists didn’t kill Measure S

July 29, 2006
Hi Barry, It appears, as I read this thread of comments, that Mary did not start commenting here to hold a conversation. Certainly, she has no intention of enunciating to us who "they" are in her mind. One thing strikes me as humorous in her posts: the drumbeat of what appear to be intended as "insults" towards Coastsider.com, by constantly repeating the term "blog". While LCP are demonized as "extremists", Coastsider.com is now being demonized as a "blog". Perhaps you should reindex this thread…

Who should replace David Gorn?

July 13, 2006
Mr. Olsen, I expect that when and if Mr. Larimer provides the answers that I requested, you will see that your question will be moot. (Now, whether Mr. Larimer makes that clear, or whether someone like Mr. Lohman or Mr. Woren will need to correct or clarify...well, that remains to be seen.)

Who should replace David Gorn?

July 11, 2006
Mr. Larimer, You wrote: "The justification for the appeals of the El Granada pipeline project were based upon its presumed “growth inducing” size. The size in fact was selected by the district engineer to provide adequate water pressure for fire protection with gravity flow. That is physics not politics. The Coastal Commission agreed with the CCWD engineering analysis. But you omit the conditions of approval that were imposed. Please explain what those conitions were - and please try to be especially…

Who should replace David Gorn?

July 04, 2006
(part 2) I attended one of the Ailanto presentations, and the settlement reached by Ailanto and the City and the Coastal Commission seems not only sensible, but even very positive for the City - including 75% open space, something in the ballpark of $1 million or so to widen Hwy 1 where the light is being planned at Terrace, something like $2.85 million in cash to the City to be used to purchase development rights from other city lot owners at genuine fair market value (no compulsion! - just as the…

Who should replace David Gorn?

July 04, 2006
Hi Dale, I find your comments here to be provocative, and I'll try to explain why in a civil and non-provocative way. (This will be two comments in length, just as your comments were. And thanks to Barry for providing this wonderful public arena!) You appear to have an agenda here. Mr. Muteff showed very poorly in the last HMB City Council election, in large part (I believe) due to his positioning himself in an extreme way - both in expressing his stance on "property rights" and in choosing right-wing…

San Mateo County flunks growth management in new report

July 05, 2006
Hi Mary, I read through some of the materials you reference in your comment today, and I find things like your reflections on the Kelo decision (i.e., the suggestion that eminent domain will be used locally to take private property for new private development that will produce higher tax revenue - something which the City of Half Moon Bay, for instance, has already rejected by a ballot measure) to be a scare tactic. I found the following statement in your "different view" PDF file: [quote] Through…

Boys and Girls Club president says unnamed planner verbally OK’d bulldozing

June 20, 2006
Thanks for the story, Barry. And Ray, I know David well enough to know that he is in a thankless position, and is generally a good guy. I have a real problem with what has been reported, though. It is all too typical around here to be told that things were all worked out verbally, and to heck with rules and procedures. Frankly, even David - a Realtor locally with Coldwell Banker and very active Chamber of Commerce leader - knows that there are rules, so how is it possible that he "took the word of…

CCF asks Coastal Commission 25 questions

July 04, 2006
Mr. Larimer, In your comment earlier today (July 4th), you say: "The issue of Foothill Blvd is not a growth issue...Foothill can help to solve the traffic problem we face today and it could be paid for in part by the wealth generated by the new homes that will be built near the high school." I attended one of the recent presentations by Ailanto, and aside from any issues of wetlands, funding, or what-have-you, there is one issue that stands out: The City of HMB - after years of back-and-forth on…

Coastal Commission alerts HMB to problems with Foothill Bypass

June 15, 2006
Ray Olson wrote: "A path of least resistance such as a road that connects 92 to 1, without going thru the downtown area, and without ANY lights, then you have a more optimum solution." And then Kevin Lansing wrote: "First, the reality is that it would have TWO lights--one at each end--unless the “bypass” promoters could somehow secure an extra $20 million in funding for two underpass/merge connections. Probability of obtaining the extra funding = 0." Well, why not instead create a grade-level…

Coastal Commission alerts HMB to problems with Foothill Bypass

June 09, 2006
Mr. Gardner, It is clear that a wetlands delineation has already been performed. Have you or Mr. Bacon actually demonstrated a route "that can be in compliance with the 100 foot buffer zones as stipulated for wetlands"? If so, please say so and show it here, and send it to Mr. Kern. I am confident that Mr. Kern and others would give it their attention and either show it to be inadequate, or fail to show it to be inadequate. That would move things forward. If not, then what is all this noise about?…

Albertsons closing in HMB

June 06, 2006
Maybe this is an appropriate time to think about the future of both the shopping center and the surrounding intersections. Half Moon Bay is currently facing a $4 million shortfall in funding for the widening of Hwy 92 alongside the shopping center. I don't know if the city will simply find the funds needed to proceed as planned, or if the project will need to be adjusted in any way. Clearly, the way traffic flows around the shopping center is problematic. The roads serve three purposes, and none…

Caltrans gives HMB a chance to discuss traffic light

May 23, 2006
Mr. Dantes, I think there are two separate issues here. At least, I've had conversations with quite a few people, and that's the conclusion I am forming. Yes, there are real traffic issues. And there is more pain for drivers from north of 92 than for drivers from south of 92. It may be entirely reasonable to implement some kind of traffic control for the right-hand turn from the south at the Hwy 1/92 intersection. And apparently, this can be done at any time, if the authorities so decide. What I…

Media examine Coastside life without Devil’s Slide

April 26, 2006
Hi Steve, You are referring to the post I made on the "Sunny Day" article. Here it is: A very simple solution exists for the 4-7 PM end-of-the-workday backup, which would allow traffic to flow down Hwy 92 into Hwy 1: 1. Force all westbound Hwy 92 traffic to turn right onto N. Main Street, and make N. Main Street 1-way toward Hwy 1. 2. Force all traffic coming up Hwy 1 from the south to turn right at Hwy 92; to continue north on Hwy 1, they would then make a left onto the one-way N. Main Street, merging…

HMB City Council video is no longer available on Coastsider

March 07, 2006
I am wondering if anyone out there has built up a personal collection of many or all of the public meetings that have been taped and shown on MCTV over the years. Can we request access to the MCTV archive? Can we demand access under laws such as the Brown Act, the Freedom of Information Act, etc.? - Hal M. Bogner Half Moon Bay

HMB City Council video is no longer available on Coastsider

Regarding the ‘ownership’ and ‘intellectual property (IP)’ issues: When the meeting is shown on MCTV, it makes good sense for people to tape it. It them makes good sense for people to pass around copies, and even to make copies - without attempting to profit financially! - to share with others who are interested. As no financial harm is being caused, what damages might MCTV assert are occurring? It’s hard for me to imagine either MCTV or HMBCC hiring attorneys, filing suit, and persuing…

Barry - Could you kindly make available your text summary that refers to what happened (and when) on the recording, even though the recording is not currently available? It makes fascinating reading all by itself. Transcriptions - whether partial or complete - would be useful and would certainly be legal to post here. Likewise, fair-use would certainly cover snippets of video as reporting, too; perhaps that would be worthwhile to provide. - Hal M. Bogner Half Moon Bay
