Some Coastsiders get to make larger political contributions than others

November 08, 2005
Brian, I didn't include "ads" because there's no question that candidates--and businesses--pay for VotC ads, as they do for Review ads. You now write that Mike "did also pay coastsider.com for an 'article.'", and that, "Barry could clarify which article if he wanted to". I've seen Mike's ads on Coastsider, and it was obvious that they were ads. I'll leave it to Barry to answer your accusation that he's taking payola from candidates for Coastsider articles.

Some Coastsiders get to make larger political contributions than others

bginna charges that 'candidates pay LCP for “articles”' in VotC. That's a serious charge, and I ask Mr Ginna to either substantiate or retract it.

What do you think about the Review and County Times endorsements?

October 28, 2005
The Times had only one reject: First to cast off our list is George Muteff, a well-meaning citizen whose idea of starting over with the Local Coastal Plan demonstrates his lack of experience and balance in approaching the area's struggle with growth, planning and environmental issues. ...going on to observe that both Partridge [sic] and Skinner would do well on the council, before ultimately endorsing McClung's "plethora of positive visions" (who writes this stuff?). The Review, uncharacteristically,…

School board decides not to decide

October 14, 2005
Roy Salume's reluctance to vote for the resolution to direct "the Superintendent to proceed with planning" a middle school at Cunha is especially perplexing. While there's no doubt that expanding the Cunha site would be desirable (I've advocated it myself in the past, albeit with no support at the time from Roy), it's hard to justify in the current context. According to the expert advisory committee, the Cunha site has two overwhelming advantages over the alternatives, Wavecrest and (Roy's choice)…

Letter: George Muteff takes his City Council campaign to right-wing radio

October 14, 2005
Last night, Muteff spent some considerable time complaining about Half Moon Bay's decision to stop clearing the Kehoe ditch. It seems only fair to let Naomi Patridge respond to his complaints, since she was part of the city council who made that decision, some years back.

I was going to bring my Bill the Cat, but I wasn't certain whether Seton was offering psychiatric services at the Clinic.

Anonymous benefactor is funding CUSD parcel tax survey

September 21, 2005
Wilson told me that the election could be held in March, April, or June in order to appear on property tax bills. June is the only one of those dates with a scheduled election, so unless someone is willing to fund another special election....

State says CUSD, Hatch in particular, failed to make adequate progress

September 21, 2005
The tutoring is supposed to be paid for with Federal Title I funding, though presumably that's not new funding, but diverted from some other use. Yes, Hatch will have to do the same next year. That's not "if", by the way: a school doesn't exit program improvement until it's made its AYP for two years in a row. More interesting is that under Hatch's Year 1 PI, the district is supposed to offer to bus students from Hatch to other elementary schools in the district that are not in PI. Presumably that…

State says CUSD, Hatch in particular, failed to make adequate progress

September 21, 2005
In addition, the district as a whole failed to make AYP, and was one of ten districts entering program improvement this year. About 15% of California's school districts are now in program improvement. Cunha has now entered Year 2 of program improvement, and will be required to provide tutoring to economically disadvantaged students.

Half Moon Bay and Wavecrest settle lawsuit

Will you be posting the text of the settlement?

Half Moon Bay wins big wetlands case against Beachwood

July 29, 2005
This decision is probably also significant for Wavecrest, where the developer's hired biologist tried to argue that hydric soils alone weren't enough to classify much of the Wavecrest property as a wetland. Wavecrest's original maps suggested that there were no wetlands at all on the site.

Montara dream home featured in Examiner

July 15, 2005
Well, it has an 1,800 square foot deck.... The article didn't mention when the house was built. If recently, I'm a little curious why "dream houses" end up on the market so soon. I confess that much of my objection to most of the monsters going up on the coast (the Seymour Ave piles are good examples) is that they're so damned ugly. I'd be a lot happier if people were building good houses.

Voice of the Coast is a time capsule from the 1970s Coastside

July 07, 2005
This is wonderful stuff. I love the hand lettering; talk about a labor of love. I suspect Barry will agree that it hasn't gotten any easier thirty-very-odd years on.

City Hall mural will be dedicated Friday

June 23, 2005
It's instructive, isn't it, that when even the Rotary Club idealizes the coastside, they minimize development. “Visitors cannot enter this city without seeing evidence of our floral agriculture, a backbone of the local economy.” Then why no mural of gas stations and fast food joints?

Coastsider gets press credentials

May 25, 2005
Congratulations on the milestone (and condolences on the photo). "... the official who complained that I had an unfair advantage over the local weekly when it came to reporting breaking news." OK, who was it, and was s/he serious?

The Coastside’s middle school site is in play again

May 13, 2005
I've been assuming that the school access would be off Main, perhaps using the Foster ROW. But who knows?

The Coastside’s middle school site is in play again

May 13, 2005
This would make Podesta a potentially easy solution to a sticky political problem in Half Moon Bay. What would be the easy solution? A road through the school site?

The Coastside’s middle school site is in play again

May 13, 2005
Your spreadsheet says 67 (not 64) for Podesta. I'd knock Wavecrest and Podesta down a bit on availability, just because of their uncertainty. Here are the current state evaluation forms, including some guidance on coming up with the numbers. Site Selection Evaluation Comparative Evaluation of Candidate Sites Those are part of a more general discussion of site selection criteria.

Developers confident Wavecrest could be completed by 1947

May 12, 2005
By the way, using the CPI deflator, an $8,000 house in 1947 would cost $68,000 today. Notice that that's apparently the upper end of the price range. Several other things strike me about the article. * Wavecrest will always be with us.... * 900 square feet for the largest house * Today, this would be a city council and water board story; 60 years ago it was a CoC story. * Headline writers weren't any more careful in 1947 than they are today.

I keyed in the text of this article a while back. WAVE CREST SUBDIVION [sic] DEPENDS ON WATER Development of the Wave Crest Subdivision by the Victory Investment Company of San Francisco depends upon Half Moon Bay's ability to supply sufficient water. This was announced by Mr. Robert C Kelly and Mr. W. W. Patty, developers, at the Tuesday night meeting of the Half Moon Bay Chamber of Commerce. With a sufficient supply of water guaranteed, the project could begin in March, with anticipated completion…
