Anyone else just feel the big jolt on the coast?  Southern California Earthquake Data Center (scedc.org) shows a 3.8 magnitud quake 2 miles SE of Pacifica.  Biggest I’ve felt in awhile!

Warrant arrests, an auto burglary at San Gregorio Beach, and a diabetic emergency in Highway 1:

Deputies were dispatched to a report of a reckless driver. They located the vehicle and made a traffic stop. The driver did not have a license and was slurring his words. The driver stated that he was diabetic but does not take insulin. Medics arrived to evaluate the driver. The driver was suffering a diabetic emergency. He was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

With spring underway, and Easter just around the corner, the Merchants at Harbor Village along with a host of other local businesses have been hard at work preparing for the Harbor Village Malls 2nd Annual Easter celebration and Charity Fundraiser Event.  The event takes place on Saturday and Sunday April 23rd and 24th from 11A.M-6 P.M at Harbor Village Mall located at 270 Capistrano road Half Moon Bay ca 94019 (Harbor Village Shops in Princeton by the Sea.) Some of the free events taking place throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday.

I have more to say on this subject, but I’ll break it up into a couple of posts.

The county has been grinding through the process of deciding who gets to run PEG (public, educational, and governmental) TV on the Coastside for nearly a year.

Following the county’s grand jury criticism that MCTV’s programming was deficient and that the station needed oversight, the county’s Public Works department put out a request for proposals for the Coastside PEG contract, reviewed the proposals, and recommended awarding the contract to Pacifica Community Television (PCT-26).

I’ve often criticized MCTV, but I was uncertain whether it would be a good idea to move our PEG provider off the Coastside. My hope was that a local entity would compete for the contract. I didn’t know a lot about PCT and I was concerned about losing local control.

Since then, I’ve had an opportunity to learn more about the station, and I now support PCT’s bid for the contract.

Last week, I toured PCT’s offices with the Midcoast Community Council. I was impressed with Station Manager Martin Anaya, the station’s well-worn-but-well-run facilities, the level of activity at the station, and the way PCT is governed.

Then, last Friday, Ian Butler invited me to appear on his public affairs talk show on PCT.  MCTV has no public affairs shows and discourages programming that might express a point of view. Ian’s show was shot in PCT’s studio, with a crew of nine, including three camera operators. I’m told MCTV has a studio, but I’m not aware of any studio shows produced by MCTV in the last decade. Why don’t we have that kind of programming in our community?

There are still some details that need to be negotiated by the county, including what kind of presence PCT will have on the Coastside, how they will cover all of our public meetings, how they will manage outreach to the community, how programs will be streamed over the internet, and how they will change their name to reflect the full community.

But, having met the folks at PCT and participated in their production process, I’m looking forward to having PCT on the Coastside.

UPDATE: Highway 92 was reopened about 12:45pm

UPDATE: Highway 92 is still under one-way traffic control as of 11:48am.  At 11am, I used Skyline moving west and found the delay to be on the order of ten to fifteen minutes. However eastbound traffic was backed up to the vicinity of La Nebbia winery.

An big rig carrying gravel is on its side on westbound Highway 92 at the junction with Skyline, blocking both lanes blocked “for a while” according to the California Highway Patrol.  A “heavy tow rig” has been requested as of 8:29am.

This week the MCC is holding two meetings to accommodate comment to the Planning Commission on Wednesday and to address the number of items to be covered this week.

Spend an hour with Ty Cobb – “The Greatest Player That Ever Played The Game.”  That is the name of the one-man show created, written and performed by long time resident of Half Moon Bay, Norm Coleman.

Mr. Coleman will perform his show at San Benito House, Sunday evening April 17, at 7PM. San Benito House is located at 356 Main St. in Half Moon Bay.

Coleman has thrilled audiences in Lakeland, Florida, winter home of the Detroit Tigers who brought him there in March 2008 to entertain Tiger fans.  He has also performed for the Ty Cobb Museum in Royston, Georgia and the President Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Coleman recently performed in Jackson, Mississippi at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

One does not have to be a baseball fan to appreciate the show that has been called, “entertaining, humorous, historical and informative.”
