The Half Moon Bay Library in cooperation with the Alzheimer’s Association will present a program on Aging and Memory on Monday November 8th at 10:00AM.  Is there is difference between the memory loss we normally associate with the aging process and that which is caused by Alzheimer’s?  Are there ways of mitigating or coping?  Join us to find out. 

This program will be presented at the Ted Adcock Community Center,  535 Kelly Ave.

The San Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program, a program of the City/County Association of Governments, is seeking for proposals from local community groups, teachers, environmental organizations, and other non-profit associations to fund projects that enhance and protect the health of local watersheds, creeks, the San Francisco Bay, and the Pacific Ocean.  SMCWPPP offers a total of $15,000 in Community Action Grants each year, with up to $3,000 awarded per project.  Interested parties are encouraged to apply by November 19, 2010.

Eligible projects should promote stormwater pollution prevention and contain a public outreach element.  Sample projects could include (but are not limited to):

  • Outreach and education projects with a stormwater pollution prevention message and a watershed, household hazardous waste, litter, or Integrated Pest Management component.
  • Development and distribution of outreach materials (e.g., video, newsletter, website, brochures, guidebook, and others).
  • Creek-side restoration/revegetation projects (erosion control, planting, cleanup, non-native species removal, habitat enhancement, and marsh restoration)
  • Art projects with a stormwater pollution prevention message. Creek studies/survey projects.

Prescribed burn in Big Basin, Friday

The California Department of Parks and Recreation is planning to ignite a 319 acre prescribed burn at Big Basin State Park starting November 5 and continuing for the next two weeks as conditions allow.

It is expected that this fire will continue to burn until extinguished by winter rains.

This Burn is being conducted to reduce the threat of wildfire and to enhance natural resources within the park. The Meteor and Hollow Tree trails from the north escape Rd. to Middle Ridge Fire Road will be closed during the burn. Middle Ridge Rd. and Johanson Rd. may also be closed for a few days during the burn.

Bay Area Ridge Trail trail volunteer day on Sweeney Ridge, Saturday

This trail just south of Skyline College boasts stunning simultaneous views of both the Pacific and the Bay. If they can stop looking at the views, volunteers will be replacing cable fencing, widening, outsloping & repairing the trail tread, and brushing back overgrown vegetation Ages 16 and older are welcome; anyone under the age of 18 must have a waiver form signed by a parent or guardian.

Hours are 9am to 12:30pm, followed by lunch, provided by Chipotle Mexican Grill

Final (semi-official) election results

12:30am update: This is the county’s "Final Semi-Official Report".

Measure K—the Half Moon Bay sales tax—has been defeated with only 47.1% to 52.9%

Measure S—even year elections for Half Moon Bay City Council—had a runaway victory with 83.1% to 16.9%.

Kirk Riemer (24.9%), Freya McCamant (22.5%), and Rob Pappalardo (21.7%) are the clear leaders for the Cabrillo Unified School District board. Charmion Donegan (17.9%) and Charles Jones (12.9%) were defeated.

Don Horsley defeated April Vargas 56.5% to 43.5% for the District 3 Supervisor seat.

Sandie Arnott defeated Dave Mandelkern 51.0% to 49.0% for county Treasurer Tax Collector.

Robert Bernardo (33.3%) and James Tucker (29.9%) defeated Sabrina Brennan (25.4%) and William Klear (11.4%) in the Harbor Commission race.

Special Post-Election Brews and Views on Nov 4: "What Just Happened?"—Free public forum welcomes guest Alex Evans, President and Founder of EMC Research with moderator Lenny Mendonca of McKinsey & Company.

Brews and Views is the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company’s regular series tackling public issues that affect us all, from California to Washington, DC. Founded and moderated by Lenny Mendonca, the founder of the Brewing Company and Director at McKinsey & Company, Brews and Views serves as both public forum and fundraiser for Coastside non-profit organizations.

On Thursday, November 4, the Brewing Company welcomes special guest Alex Evans, President and Founder of EMC Research, a recognized expert in California for all forms of opinion research, focus groups, voter polls, strategic design and development, and public policy analysis. The topic of discussion is the November 2nd midterm elections: the trends, voting patterns and results, from the local and state level to national races, and how the races might have been affected by the Tea Party movement.

Ten percent of proceeds from all dinner sales at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company that evening will be donated to Cabrillo Education Foundation.

Jazz Living Legacy Award winner Rufus Reid will perform with his Trio – Out Front, 4:30, Sunday, November 7th  at the Douglas Beach House in Half Moon Bay. 
 
In presenting Rufus Reid with the 2005 Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation saluted him as “an American treasure with the vision to make a difference and turn possibilities into results.”  In more than 300 recordings, he has galvanized this legendary status in his historical contribution to the music. Bassist Reid will be continuing the celebration of  The Rufus Reid Trio—Out Front by Motema, released March, 2010, featuring Steve Allee ~ piano, Duduka Da Fonseca ~ drums and Rufus Reid - bass.
