We’ve redesigned Coastsider

Editorial

By on Tue, September 28, 2010

You may not even be able to put your finger on it if you’re not a frequent visitor, but we’ve made a pretty big change to Coastsider’s design.

The main column is significantly wider.  This gives us more white space, better readability, and room for bigger pictures. It also increases the relative emphasis on content over the links in the right-hand column.

We’ve also moved some more-static and less-newsworthy links to the foot of each page.

If you have any questions or suggestions, you can post them as comments on this story, or email [email protected].

“Oh My God”, Sat

Press release

By on Tue, September 28, 2010

On Saturday, October 2nd, The Visionary Edge will present Oh My God, a film by Peter Rodger, who traveled 23 countries to ask “What is God?”  The film will be preceded by a Global Potluck Dinner at 6:00 pm, so bring your favorite foreign dish! The filmmaker will introduce the film via skype at 7:30pm, followed by the screening.  All will take place at Community United Methodist Church in Half Moon Bay.

In every corner of the world, there’s one question that can never be definitively answered, yet stirs up equal parts passion, curiosity, self-reflection and often wild imagination: “What is God?” Filmmaker Peter Rodger explores this profound, age-old query in the provocative non-fiction feature “Oh My God?”

This visual odyssey travels the globe with a revealing lens examining the idea of God through the minds and eyes of various religions and cultures, everyday people, spiritual leaders and celebrities. His goal: to give the viewer the personal, visceral experience of some kind of reasonable, meaningful definition of one of the most used word in most every language.

In addition to everyday people and spiritual leaders, Rodger interviews celebrities David Copperfield, Dr. John F. DeMartini, Sir Bob Geldof, actor Hugh Jackman, HRH Princess Michael of Kent, singer Seal, Beatle Ringo Starr, and actor Jack Thompson.

A brave film that confronts a divisive issue, Fri

Letter

By on Thu, September 23, 2010

The Coastside Film Society proudly presents Under the Same Moon (La misma luna) 109 minutes

"Director Patricia Riggen’s "Under the Same Moon" is a brave film that proudly puts a face to an issue that has polarized America." Joseph Belanger, IMDB.com

Rated PG-13—Spanish and English with English subtitles

Nine year old Carlitos lives with his grandmother in a depressed Mexican town.  His mother, Rosario, cleans houses in Los Angeles. They long for each other, and keep in touch via a weekly phone conversation.  "We are not so far apart" the mother tells her son "look up and you see the same moon I see".

Carlitos begs to be allowed to come see his mother. Rosario is emphatic—no child of hers will ever be allowed to sneak across the border. When his grandmother passes away in her sleep, Carlitos decides to attempt the trip on his own. From this point on "Moon" becomes a road movie, with Carlitos hooking up with some dangerous people who put him in jeopardy, and a few reluctant angels, who help guide him on his way.

"Director Patricia Riggen smuggles us, with no-bull authority, into the rituals, jokes, and survival games of a culture of half-existence: people who live in two places and nowhere at all. The film says that the U.S. immigrant situation is untenable, and then it forces us to ask: What should be done? That’s a good enough ‘‘argument’’ to find in a movie with an ending so touching it could make Lou Dobbs cry."  Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Week.Friday, Sept 24 at 8:00 pm

Suggested adult donation, $6.00, Kids $3.00
