Presidential candidate Congressman Dennis Kucinich, will be speaking at an event in Pacifica this Saturday, March 31. The event will start at 1:30 pm and run until 4:30. Kucinich is scheduled to speak starting at 3:30 at Sanchez Concert Hall, 1220 Linda Mar Blvd. in Pacifica. A donation of $10 will be requested at the door.

The Coastside Democrats are among several groups sponsoring this event.

A movie, The Ground Truth, a documentary film of U.S. soldiers’ stories on the ground in Iraq will be shown starting at 2:00 pm and there will be additional entertainment, refreshments and good cheer.

Bring a friend and hear the most anti-war presidential candidate speak out on Iraq/Iran, domestic policies, global warming, and his Department of Peace Campaign.

San Mateo County Blue Circle, "A community forum to share ideas, information, and resources for the goal of natural resource management, education, and stewardship" is holding its next event Tuesday April 3, 2007, 3:30 to 5:30 pm at Elkus Ranch south of Half Moon Bay. The Blue Circle meetings are sponsored by the San Mateo County Resource Conservation District.

"Neighbors: Public & Private Lands" will feature panelists Audrey Rust (Peninsula Open Space Trust), Bob Marsh (San Mateo County Farm Bureau, farmer & rancher), David Sanguinetti- (Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District), Sue Gardner (Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy) Vince Fontana (rancher), and a residential neighbor of open space to be announced. The speakers will be followed by a social.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the Half Moon Bay City Council voted to withdraw the crucial definitions chapter of its Local Coastal Program update from review by the Coastal Commission. 

The Council also discussed regulating chain stores and decided to take the matter up again during their strategic planning process in July. The documents from this agenda item (linked below) includes a summary from City Attorney Adam Lindgren of what other communities have done to regulate chain stores.

The American Legion is holding a cioppino fundraising dinner, featuring live jazz by Sonya Jason’s Groove, Thursday, March 29, to benefit their Fourth of July Coastside fireworks.  Tickets are $40 for one cioppino dinner, which includes salad, garlic bread, and a drink. Seatings will be at 5 and 7:30pm at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company. Proceeds benefit the fireworks committee.

A missing New York man may be on the California coast.  The Monterey Herald is reporting that [Name obscured]‘s credit card was used last weekend in Big Sur.

He had been told the room he’d just paid for wasn’t ready, and an hour later he returned. By then, staff members told him his mother was worried and that he should call her.

"He said he needed to go to a pay phone," [Name obscured] said. And he didn’t return.

In the early afternoon, sheriff’s deputies tracked down [Name obscured] rented Dodge Caravan, abandoned a mile north of Lucia.

UPDATE: We have learned that [Name obscured] is in Mexico City. He called his family and said he wants to come home. He plans to take a bus to Tijuana, where he’ll be met by family.

Viewers watching my video of Monday’s workshop on a proposed development adjacent to Farallone View Elementary School might get the impression that Montara residents are hostile to developers. As a Montara resident, I can say that nothing can be further from the truth. Take this modular home, photographed Wednesday, for example. Close inspection of the photo hints that this lovely portion of a home is built in Nebraska by modular builder Timber Creek. It’s headed along Third/Kanoff/George to a multi-house development on Date made up of similar modular homes—most locals are probably unaware of this busy, new construction zone.

But the immediate neighbors know. One has kindly put up a brightly colored, handmade sign with the words, "Flood Zone," emblazoned upon it. Don’t you feel the love?

The Mavericks big wave surf contest has extended its deadline from March 31 to April 15, reports Julia Scott in the County Times.

A longer window is sure to please event sponsors, who invested thousands of dollars in Mavericks this year in return for the sort of priceless publicity the hip, youthful sporting event can generate.

And just in case the weather refuses to cooperate, event organizers Mavericks Surf Ventures are now planning to hold a big, public party at the beach in April instead — with bands, celebrity surfers, prizes, and all the hype a corporate sponsor could ever wish for

"We’re a company that sells a brand. ... We’re creating a company that can survive and even thrive, whether a contest does or doesn’t happen every year," said Beadling. "We’re making sure we’re keeping our sponsors happy."

The organizers have already spent much of the sponsors’ money on permits, fees, and publicity.
