On Thursday, December 9th at 10:00AM Phase2 Careers will be offering an Employment Roundtable.  Representatives from businesses such as the Ritz Carlton and First National Bank will serve on a panel offering; a way to interface and network with hiring managers, a snapshot of the various Bay Area industries and companies,and a means to learn about specific companies and their corporate cultures.  This is an excellent resource tool for those changing careers or industries. On Thursday, December 2, the Brewing Company welcomes special guest Emmett Carson, Ph.D., CEO and President of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. An internationally recognized philanthropic leader for more than two decades, Dr. Carson is responsible for providing the vision for one of the largest community foundations in the United States with assets of $1.7 billion.

Dr. Carson will be joined by special guest moderator Mark Battey for a compelling discussion about post-election California as it heads into 2011. With the federal government in retreat, the state budget in disaster and counties and cities in crisis, urgent questions are being asked about the future of local communities. What happens to safety nets? What is the role of philanthropy, and what can and can’t it accomplish? Are non-profits, community and faith groups able to step in and meet the community’s needs?

Brews and Views is the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company’s regular series tackling public issues that affect us all, from California to Washington, DC. Founded by Lenny Mendonca, the founder of the Brewing Company and Director at McKinsey & Company, Brews and Views serves as both public forum and fundraiser for Coastside non-profit organizations.

The Coastisde Farmers’ Market is open today from 2:30 to 6 PM in Rockaway Beach.  So -  C’mon down to round out your Thanksgiving Day offerings, pile in a few supplies for visiting friends and family, chose a little something to bring to your host if you are not cooking, or pick up something quick to manage the teaming hordes tonight.

Me, I am picking up a peck of sweet potatoes that I intend to peel, cut into big thick wheels, pile into a deep baking dish, splash then with lemons juice and then cover with a whole pan of sliced onions that have been sauteed ( not caramelized - that makes ‘em too sweet) with fresh ground cumin.  Bake the whole magical for about 40 minutes and defy forever the tradition of hyper-sweet goo-coated stupor-inducing yams. 

We are grateful as all get-out for the support of you our Marketeers, and to our sponsors and the Friends of the Farmers’ Market for another great season.  Especially this year when the weather-makers have been so, well, let’s call it challenging.  This has been a tough one for these neighbors and friends of ours who grow our food, these ones who risk everything every day - including their own health and security - so we can all eat better and live more healthy and cohesive lives.  I’ll be raising a glass to them all tomorrow and recommend you do the same. It will feel great, I guarantee.

The San Mateo County Planning Commission fully approved the Big Wave development at a meeting in Redwood City in a three to two vote. The vote took place at about 11:30 Tuesday morning in Redwood City

After considering the revised traffic report, the commission approved not only the development’s Environmental Impact Report, but a Coastal Development Permit, twenty-year Development Agreement, other agreements needed to move the project forward. The project is appealable to the Coastal Commission and the county Board of Supervisors.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a cold snap for this week, beginning Tuesday night and extending to the Thanksgiving, but it will continue to be cold for the rest of the week.

Light snow accumulations are possible above 1500 feet.

A new modified arctic airmass originating over western canada will reach the bay area and central coast tuesday afternoon. This will be the coldest weather of the season so far and it will be arriving during a major holiday week. Expect gusty northwest winds…And much colder temperatures with near record lows possible. Light snow accumulations are possible in the north and east bay mountains as well as in the santa cruz mountains above 1500 feet. The coldest weather will arrive tuesday evening and last into thursday…But chilly weather will linger through the end of the week.

Freezing and sub-freezing temperatures are expected across inland valley locations wednesday and thursday mornings. In particular the north and east bay counties will be impacted by near freezing to sub- freezing temperatures. A winter weather advisory for the north bay mountains will be issued later today. A freeze watch mainly for interior valley locations will be issued later today as well.
