"My choice for the most uplifting, most hopeful, and a jolly entertaining ride all around with elements of everything only a Bollywood film is renowned for. One of my top films of the year!" NutShell Review

If you have never seen a Bollywood blockbuster, or if you have seen one and was put off by the general cheesiness of some films in this genre, the Coastside Film Society has a treat for you.

3 Idiots is not only a superlative comedy, it's also a great coming of age drama, morality tale, and musical all rolled into one. It is not only the highest-grossing Bollywood film ever made, many film critics have already labelled it an instant classic -- a film that is going to stand the test of time.

The story centers on three friends who meet while attending a prestigious engineering college in India. Indian superstar Aamir Khan plays Rancho, the charismatic leader of the trio. He’s a genius prankster who is not only the top ranked student at the school, but also the bane of school’s administration whose rigid rules he constantly mocks and challenges. He works hard to get his friends to stop worrying so much about their grades and instead to devote more energy into following their dreams (No matter what your parents say, not everyone is destined to be an engineer).

Along the way these three friends crash a few weddings, shove a funeral impossibly out of control, save a few lives, tug a few heart-strings, and solve a deep mystery. There are three musical numbers that left my kids humming for weeks. The film is set in India, so English is spoken in school, and Hindi outside. (subtitles provided).

Gaurav Malani, of the India Times calls the film “One of the most entertaining films of the decade. Director Hirani grabs your attention from scene one with an unconventional opening to the film. Thereafter every single scene written in the screenplay is not just relevant but also has a clear set objective - to be funny or deeply poignant. Which means it either makes you laugh or cry and at some superlative instances do both simultaneously…. After watching the film, you won’t mind being certified as an idiot. If you still don’t approve of the film, you are a certified cynic.”

$8.00, children & students $3.00 Rated PG 13 – for a drinking scene, college high jinks, and occasional crude words spoken in Hindi. Running time: 160 minutes.

MCC Planning and Building Committee meeting, Tuesday CANCELED

NOTE: This meeting has been canceled until a new location can be found.

MCC Planning and Building Committee next meeting Tuesday, September 20 @ 7:30 at GSD

Location: Granada Sanitary District Office

504 Ave. Alhambra, 3rd Floor, El Granada

The MCC Planning and Building Committee meetings are an outcome from a discussion from the MCC Regular Meeting of July 27, 2011 around the issues of Zoning, Variances and Usage Permits and the building permit process in the unincorporated MidCoast. Since this is a process that is both confusing and inconsistently enforced, it has led to both community frustration and lawsuits and an inordinate amount of time and money for people to build in the MidCoast.

There has been one preliminary meeting on August 23, 2011 at GSD with a few of the people who expressed interest in helping. Some ideas that are being considered to better serve the community is to have two sub-committees to the MCC Planning and Building Committee to deal with the myriad of issues that affect the coastside within this topic:

1.     A Screening Committee that would serve as a watchdog on all building permits for the MidCoast and identify possible issues concerning the building permit process. Since there are many rules and regulations on the coastside (zoning, variances, use permits, Coastal Development Permits (CDP), Local Coastal Program (LCP) and more) which need to be looked at and response times are limited, this would be a critical function to identify permits which need further scrutiny.

2.     A Strategic Committee, of more experienced residents who are experienced with county planning and building process, which would work with the Screening Committee to examine projects which may have irregularities and identify specific conflicts with current regulations. This committee would also look at ways to strengthen the building process so that the county, developers and community members would have a well-defined process that is consistent with policies and fairly enforced.

There was also a discussion on meeting logistics. Since community meeting space is at a premium on the coastside and many other agencies meetings are well established, it was decided that we would aim to have regularly scheduled meetings on the First and Third Tuesdays of the month at GSD at 7:30 pm. This can be revisited once the committee gets established and the active members feel a change is needed.

Knowledgeable and/or enthusiastic community members are needed to join this committee and staff the two subcommittees to help provide the MidCoast with a resource to guide them through the planning and building process.

California Coastal Cleanup Day is Saturday, Sept 17

By on Wed, September 14, 2011

On Saturday, September 17th, people of all ages can help make San Mateo County cleaner and greener by scouring beaches and watersheds during California Coastal Cleanup Day, the largest volunteer event of its kind in the State.

Families, students, service groups and neighbors will have the opportunity to help out at more than 30 cleanup sites across San Mateo County. Residents are invited to show up at any of the locations at 9 a.m., and most cleanups will end by noon

Coastal Cleanup Day is coordinated by the San Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program and California Coastal Commission. This is the 27th year thousands of Californians will work together along beaches, shorelines and inland waterways to pick up cigarette butts, cans, bottles, plastic bags, grocery carts, old tires and other debris. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own bucket or reusable bag, gloves, and reusable water bottle.

Last year, more than 4,200 volunteers in San Mateo County removed 42,000 pounds of trash and recyclables that would otherwise soil the County and threaten the health of wildlife. The vast majority of the debris wasn’t dropped on beaches or tossed into a watershed. Most of the debris started out as garbage on urban streets and was carried by storm drains or blown by the wind. This makes it critical to clean up neighborhood streets before trash flows to the Bay and ocean.
