Letter: Fourth of July Spy

Tim, the articles linked fine in you comment They show up like footnotes when you're typing, but they're regular web links when your comment actually appears on the the page. Sorry if that's confusing. The advantage is that it's easier to read when you're editing. They also look correct in the live preview area right below the comment entry form.

Letter: Fourth of July Spy

July 06, 2008
The Fourth of July parade is one of those times when Coastsiders from all sides come together in celebration of our community and the miracle democracy. I think what you encountered is an exception to the rule, and I guess I'm not surprised that at least one of these guys was from out of town.

Just the facts: Where’s the water for CCWD?

July 02, 2008
As a MWSD customer, I'm grateful to Paul's perspective on CCWD. Some folks are beginning to urge the merging of MWSD and CCWD, so the residents of each district need to understand how the other works. Particularly where their water comes from and where it goes. Paul's perspective is especially valuable because he knows the Coastside water situation well and has no vested interest in defending CCWD. It's the conversation that help us understand the situation, and CCWD board member Jim Larimer has…

Letter: Alternatives to July 4th fireworks?

Wasn't there also a Montara/Moss Beach picnic?

Letter: Alternatives to July 4th fireworks?

Half Moon Bay already has one excellent alternative: an old-fashioned small-town parade down Main Street. Community Picnics are another traditional celebration of the Fourth.

Half Moon Bay negotiating its surrender in Sacramento

June 28, 2008
I walked the Beachwood property earlier this year to take some photos. It struck me that, although it looks like a gap when you're whizzing by from south to north at 55 MPH, when you're traveling from west to east it forms a continuous band with the hills east of the city. There is literally no development between Beachwood and the city of San Mateo ten miles to the east. One goal of AB1991's supporters is to build a bypass through Beachwood and the hills and to enable this by reconfiguring the Pacific…

Letter: Alternatives to July 4th fireworks?

June 28, 2008
I love the community fireworks display at the harbor and I'm glad to see it finally has a stable sponsor. I think a surprising number of Coastsiders are confused by the fact that as they drive through Pacifica, fireworks are for sale on every corner. They don't understand that those fireworks are illegal in the unincorporated Midcoast and Half Moon Bay.

Half Moon Bay negotiating its surrender in Sacramento

June 27, 2008
Ric's point about the city gambling is correct. It would appear that the whole AB1991 ruse was cooked up in order to make the $18 million more palatable to the city. It's like selling a timeshare: Keenan: "Sure, $18 million is a lot of money, guys. But you could wind up owing nothing!" HMB: "Wow. Nothing! I think we could afford nothing." Keenan: "And I'll tell you what. Don't tell the sales manager, but I can throw in a option to buy Glencree. You don't already own Glencree, do you?" HMB: "Um, no."…

Aircraft over Montara

I fixed url in John's post. Thanks to Brian for figuring out the problem.

Half Moon Bay’s insurmountable opportunity

June 26, 2008
Thanks. The article from the County Times that I quoted a little while ago really places this thing in perspective. Great quotes as well. http://origin.insidebayarea.com/ci_9695035 Mullin's office and lawyers for Half Moon Bay are in negotiations over an "alternative" version of the bill with environmental groups that have opposed But here's the question. If the city is giving direction to its lawyers over AB1991's new face, and the revised bill is not going to implement the settlement, how can they…

Landowners sue HMB, saying Oak Avenue Park is on their property

June 22, 2008
The court site is really confusing and it took me a while to figure this out also. You can now download the complaint and attached map from Coastsider.

Landowners sue HMB, saying Oak Avenue Park is on their property

June 20, 2008
More detail from the story, which helps explain *how* this wound up in court. >He explained that the time gap between the construction of the park and the filing of the lawsuit was "an 18-month attempt to peacefully negotiate with the city." >"We wanted to keep this out of litigation, the eight homeowners did," Wilson said. "We tried very, very hard to get the city's attention and get them to be serious about this." >Wilson described the city's response to his clients' letters as "dismissive".

HMB’s AB1991 representative Lanny Davis joins Fox News

June 18, 2008
It's a mistake to get your news from *any* cable news outlet. John Stewart has made a career of mocking what they do and how they do it. However, Fox News is the worst of a bad lot. I do get the impression that when people talk about how much they love this beautiful place, some are talking about the sense of a small town in a relatively natural environment and some are talking about ocean-accessible real estate.

HMB High students win opportunities in science

June 16, 2008
This is great. I remember a summer mathematics program I was able to attend at a University when I was in high school. It was sponsored by the National Science Foundation (back when such things were done). It was a tremendously influential program. I never became a mathematician or scientist, but it really changed the way I saw the world and prepared me for college in a way my small, poor high school was unable to do.

Letter: Unacceptable conduct at football game!

June 16, 2008
My concern has always been that whenever this topic comes up, it unleashes a tide of defensive justification. I don't get the sense that the community is condemning this behavior, which I find troubling. Take a look at this thread that arose when Michael posted this letter on the Review's site: http://talkabout.hmbreview.com/topic.php?t=2271&c=9&d;=

Pants on fire

June 14, 2008
Steve, I've gone back and read the city's claims about the Coastal Commission's supposed lies, and what I find is typical Lanny Davis quibbling about the interpretation of subtle nuances. It's hard to read without getting a headache. If the city had actually caught the Coastal Commission in a lie, you'd think they'd put out a press release about that, rather than a press release about a website that contains a document with a dozen pages of nit-pickery. They weren't announcing any lies they discovered.…

Pants on fire

June 14, 2008
To be a lie, a statement must be deliberately false. Both Bonnie McClung and Lanny Davis have said that the Coastal Commission is making deliberately false statements. From the city's press release on May 28: "The Commission staff has every right to oppose this legislation based on the facts, but the City cannot allow these false statements to go unchallenged," Mayor McClung said. "Once it became clear that the staff was misrepresenting its own history with the Beachwood property in an attempt to…

Another bill to exempt developer from the law submitted to Assembly

June 09, 2008
This certainly puts the whole notion of "no precedent" into a new light.

HMB Safeway isn’t as expensive as you think, but it’s no bargain

June 07, 2008
Good catch. I've updated the analysis and uploaded my new spreadsheet. The net is that New Leaf and Whole Food are much closer to Safeway now.

HMB releases financial analysis of Beachwood settlement

June 06, 2008
I'll add the more-detailed information to the spreadsheet as soon as I can. In the meantime, thanks to Kevin B for noting the mixed-up links, which I've fixed. Steven, the cash value of the settlement should be at least as attractive to Keenan as the right to build, or he wouldn't have agreed to it.
