HMB Review waves its petard about, with predictable results

May 20, 2006
Not having seen the financials, I'd guess $2million +/- 50% The Review's (local, paid) circulation is declining, despite the fact that the Coastside's population is growing. That's not a good sign. I think it might be cheaper and easier to start a print competitor from scratch, depending on how eager the Wicks family is to sell.

Eric Rice's three-part series on the history of the tunnel ran in the Half Moon Bay Review.

Come meet Coastsider at Rock the Block Friday

May 18, 2006
Coastsider's booth will be on the North end of main between mill and kelly - closer to mill.

Caltrans may end “free” right turns onto Hwy 92 for HMB commuters

May 21, 2006
Timothy: I think the organizers of last week's Solar Home Tour were people you would characterize as "no-growthers". I see more LCP bumper stickers on hybrids and cheap compacts than I do on SUV's. Considering how meaningless any local gestures are in the face of global warming and and our current energy consumption, I find their seriousness about such matters to be awfully sincere. To say "They seem more conderned about preserving the empty lot next to their house as open space than doing anything…

Devil’s Slide will be open in late September, says Caltrans

We'll have more detail on how the repair will work later today.

Opinion:  Foothill Bypass, Part III: We can’t afford it

May 14, 2006
Wow! $2,000 a year! How much more would you be willing to kick in for schools, libraries, parks, sports fields, pedestrian and bike paths, and other community facilities?

Opinion:  Foothill Bypass, Part II: A legal (and literal) quagmire

Brian's commment is more incendiary than helpful. Several people have characterized Mike and others as obstructionists and naysayers, but I think Mike has done a good job laying out the practical challenges to making this project work. CCF has made a proposal, but has addressed none of these issues, as far as I can tell. Unless someone can show how this can be done and how it will solve our present problem, Mike's inference that this is being proposed for cynical political purposes to exploit a community…

Un Dia Sin Immigrantes (A Day Without Immigrants)

May 09, 2006
The LA Times has posted their own debunking of what they describe as a "hoax". Here's the introduction, following by a link to the complete story on their LAT editorial blog: Just the Facts--UPDATED According to the search service Technorati, at least 130 weblogs have recently posted 10 "facts" about immigration, allegedly coming from the L.A. Times. As Readers' Representative Jamie Gold has pointed out, this list, which is being forwarded around the world at lightning speed, is a hoax. We combed…

Un Dia Sin Immigrantes (A Day Without Immigrants)

May 04, 2006
This list has been circulated on the net with different claims about where it comes from, including the Los Angeles Times. As usual, snopes.com has done a great job of uncovering the truth behind these ten claims. From Snopes: The various figures quoted above were not taken from a 2002 Los Angeles Times article. They appear to have been gleaned from a variety of sources and vary in accuracy as noted below. http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/taxes.asp

New Coastside organizations will promote “infrastructure sensitive to the environment”

Corrections made. I can recommend Mary's blog, which is one of the best on the Coastside.

Landslide cuts communication to the Coastside

April 24, 2006
I'm not a geologist, but it is my impression that the entire Coastside is a "slide-prone area".

I can't be certain, but I believe the geologist in the foreground is Grant Wilcox, whom we taped at the MCC meeting on Wednesday.

Caltrans padlocks road, closes trails on Slide to hikers

April 12, 2006
The rationale is safety. Caltrans told me (on Monday, I think) that boulders were continuing to fall north and south of the Slide.

HMB Fire Chief announces his intention to leave department

March 23, 2006
My point was that it's important not to draw the wrong conclusion from the circumstances surrounding the chief's resignation, because there are multiple plausible scenarios. I have heard a lot of rumors about the Chief's personal reasons for resigning and have chosen not to report on those or to speculate. In truth, it doesn't matter because this is a sideshow. In a couple of months he'll be long gone and most of us won't remember his name. The one thing that's indisputable is that the district was…

HMB Fire Chief announces his intention to leave department

March 22, 2006
The coincidence is uncanny. However, another reasonable interpretation is that he decided to write the memo as it became clear to him he would need to leave earlier than promised.

HMB City Council does the right thing (and gets same result)

March 23, 2006
The video project is still a work in progress and I'm afraid the best way to see the videos is to do a little work at your end. Not knowing your setup, I'm going to recommend the following, which should work for any Windows user. I strongly recommend downloading and installing the Firefox browser <http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/>, and the current version of Quicktime <http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download>. After you've installed both (in that order), go to the page, and clicking on…

Opinion: Downtown in a downturn

March 16, 2006
Then there's Harbor Village in Princeton, which is likely to have two effects. There are downtown merchants who are waiting so they can move there as soon as they can. And it's going to intercept even more Montara/Moss Beach/El Granada traffic before it even gets downtown.

HMB City Council interviews are likely to be a charade, says McClung

March 15, 2006
Ironically, you've misquoted me. The headline says "HMB City Council interviews are likely to be a charade, says McClung". Not that she said they are, or will be, a charade. I also never said the having interviews was a charade. I said it was the right thing to do. Whether the interviews become a charade depends on the conduct of the city council, which has not exactly covered itself with glory this year. For the record, I raked the Review over the coals on a matter of fact, not of interpretation.…

HMB City Council interviews are likely to be a charade, says McClung

March 14, 2006
My dictionary defines "charade" as "an absurd pretense intended to create a pleasant or respectable appearance". I agree with Lani that it's important to go through with the process, for a whole host of reasons. Doing things out in the open is always the right thing to do
