Kite surfer killed at Poplar Beach

March 09, 2009
The thing I noticed to this story, as reported by the Merc, is that a bystander phoned in to 911 after noticing this victim's body floating in the water. Assumption made by me here, is that the victim's cries for help were carried away by the wind, the recreationists out and about in yesterday's chilly sunshine were naturally not paying attention, so the victim thrashed about until exhausted and drowned. A girlfriend on the shore or a fellow kite surfer would have kept their eyes on him, noticed…

Raptor identification workshop and wavecrest bird walk, Saturday

February 25, 2009
This is why I love living here. Thank you for putting this together! I was so happy yesterday to see the Coastside Land Trust sign on 92 westbound announcing this walk. What a signifier of a community's priorities! *Welcome to Coastside San Mateo County. Join us in nature. Learn about our backyard birdies.* How nice that we get to live in a community that appreciates its bounty.

When coastside displays empty storefronts, a couple of closed restaurants and For Lease signs posted on empty office space, why would this commercial project be needed?

HMB roads among the worst in the county

January 31, 2009
Yes, and we've remained in this 50-59 "At-Risk" category for the past 4 years. In fact, upon further scan of the table, most cities remain within their own category over the 4 year tracking, giving us an indication that, perhaps, once an "At-Risk," always an "At-Risk?"

Okay, one way to consider this: 1) We're in good company as the other cities scoring between 50-59 in the category of "At Risk" are fine rural 'burbs such as San Anselmo, Calistoga, Petaluma, Napa, and St. Helena. Fine cities with whom to be associated. 2) The cities with the "Very Good" and "Good" top scores are all cities that this reader considers well-managed, albeit not my kind of towns: Brentwood, Los Altos, Foster City, Oakley, and the fastest growing 'burb of them all, Gilroy. In fact, not…

“Catch of the Day”: Surfrider guerilla ad campaign

January 30, 2009
Seriously though: Any of you who have cleaned beaches have surely found similar items to what is neatly packaged in the trays photo'd in the link provided above. On Poplar Beach, we find every weekend morning, party remnants of the previous evening's festivities: beer cans, hard alcohol bottles, solo party cups, underpants, smoldering embers of a beach bonfire. This trash provides a dangerous environment for the beach visitors, and is washed out to sea at the next high tide. Dumpsters are provided…

Barry, I thought I'd see gorillas in this post?

Downtown HMB suffering along with the rest of us

January 15, 2009
Why doesn't someone ask the psychic on Main Street about what businesses would be great investments for downtown? Speaking to Jeffs' point of having "not enough stores and not the right stores" downtown, I'd have to agree. I think this thread has already been covered here on Coastsider a few years back. I believe the request was made for more stores that support locals' needs, so that locals will support the stores, and to cut back on the tourist-type stores. I believe the term "Carmelization" was…

Open space being used to grow marijuana in Santa Clara County

December 06, 2008
Just to add to the mix: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081206/ap_on_re_eu/eu_netherlands_amsterdam_cleanup I still believe the stuff should be legalized. I believe that what Amsterdam's cleaning up, is not the legalization of marijuana, but the commerce and culture they initially built around it. Legalize it so that it may be grown cleanly and openly in proper spaces, not secretly in open spaces. No one around here has to bootleg booze up in the hills, a practice that, like pot farming, also led to…

Open space being used to grow marijuana in Santa Clara County

November 24, 2008
Too bad we haven't legalized marijuana, thereby allowing it to be grown out in the open, alongside brussel sprouts, artichokes, strawberries, pumpkins, and vineyards. As it is, these hidden pot farms make for an unsafe open space environment, in regard for safety of hikers enjoying the great outdoors, as well as the the health of the land by all the poisons and fertlizers used to manage the "agriculture." After harvest, left behind are the farmer's waste products of irrigation tubing, camping gear,…

Letter: Sorry, but this Coastsider is not pumped for public transit

November 03, 2008
Yes, even living on the other side of the hill it's tough for kids to ride the bus to school unless they live within a bus line that feeds directly to their school. It seems that SamTrans is effective at getting one from Point A to Point B, but not to Point M. And maybe that's the mindset we all must take, is that public transit isn't for the distance, just the short journey. Shame though, as I said above, I left out the cost in both time and dollars it would take if I had to rely on SamTrans to…

I've always meant to hike there - is it dog friendly?

Letter: Montara Mountain Lovers, please leash your dogs

September 30, 2008
Good details - thanks Suzy and Todd! You both reminded me of the few people I've run into out at Wavecrest where their dogs would run up to us (my dog and I) with the comment, "He's very friendly." I wasn't stoked when their dog jumped up on me, complete with muddy paws. One woman commented, upon seeing me leash my dog away from her dog, "Oh I tried fighting that battle for years, dogs will do what they want, best to just let them be." It's similar to people with bratty kids. Some people parent their…

Letter: Montara Mountain Lovers, please leash your dogs

September 30, 2008
Well then, if the offenders aren't reading the posted signs of Dogs On-Leash at the trailheads, then they won't read your message here. Best to confront them when you see them, on the trail itself. =\

Letter: Montara Mountain Lovers, please leash your dogs

September 27, 2008
Is it just the dogs being off-leash that is the issue, or is it behavior in which the dogs off-leash engage that is the problem? I'm not guilty of off-leash dogs at Montara, however, I do very much enjoy letting my dog off-leash at Wavecrest, as do many others, and it would be helpful to know the perception here so that we may adjust if need be. If it's the former, then so long as there's a leash-code posted, then yes, that's a problem, if it's the latter, then do describe what kinds of things the…

Florida trees are cut down to preserve views…of billboards

September 17, 2008
Scott asked, "When did HMB southern city limit to Route 35 near Daly City get cut out?" Answer: San Mateo County's 1975 Scenic Highway Report Route 1 originally included in Exhibit D the entire 47 mile stretch of road from the Santa Cruz County line through Pacifica. This report also mentioned design considerations for utility lines, signs, sign mountings, guardrails, fences and gates, mailboxes, parking facilities, and even new subdivision highway access. This report was submitted for consideration…

Florida trees are cut down to preserve views…of billboards

Good thing California has a -no billboards law- protecting its California coastline, yeah? That is, those sections of the route which are lucky enough to make it under the status of "Scenic Highway."

Letter: Intruder in a yard, in HMB

August 03, 2008
Does the City of Half Moon Bay offer any programs to the homeless? This is not my area of expertise, so if someone is familiar and well-versed in the City's homeless solution, please describe. I believe the homeless enjoy the same rights as we with homes do, just as we would also be told to move along, should we camp along the shoulder of the road. We're all subject to the same laws and restrictions. So what programs does the City offer toward which law enforcement would sweep, or currently sweeps,…

Letter: Intruder in a yard, in HMB

August 03, 2008
One night I was talking on the phone in my dark living room, (long phone conversation that had lingered past sunset), and I'm gazing out the window and find a man in black sweatshirt and beanie exiting my yard through the front gate(!). Somewhat similar experience to yours, although I did not phone the police because I couldn't see him to recognize him, he'd exited and slipped away into the night. If this happens again I'll open my front door and let the dog go after him, then I'll call the cops.
