The decaying parts of the rust belt are that way because they could not be sustained, not because they did not continue to grow. The info from the mayor in HMB is bogus, paid-for spin. The material written by the Truth Squid should be an embarrassment to every independent-thinking, well-meaning citizen of Half Moon Bay. But in an atmosphere where many seemingly buy, without questioning, the philosophical snake oil that "growth is good," you can only question whether or not the necessary knowledge…

"Growth is good." In the same narrow, self-centered, short-term sense, cancer is good if you make your money as an oncologist, care facility, drug company, or some other business dealing with the disease. Indeed, cancer is a form of growth. In the natural world, growth is balanced by decay, births are balanced by deaths, uplifted mountains wear away, and so on as the overall systems and processes maintain. Artificial activities, artificial growth can be considered positive only to the degree that…

Here's another article in the Trib showing what can happen if a city doesn't just roll over for a judgement against it in favor of a pushy developer:

It's been the worst possible year in California for earth science deniers. A couple of big winter storms to bolster their happy illusion rainfall concerns are just a fabrication of worry warts, then virtually nothing. Nature pulled a misdirection move on them, and they fell for it. It *has* been a high precipitation year for the central Rockies and parts of the Northwest. Quite a bit of stormy weather from the south-central Oregon coast on north, to the point that people were complaining when we…

Dams don't make water. Droughts are caused by less than "normal" precipitation, not by a lack of storage infrastructure. One way to deal with drought is to plan for water usage no greater than what was available in the driest historic (drought) years. The easiest "found" water is to be had from conservation. Beyond that, you simply have to limit human population, agriculture, industry, and other big factors in water usage to what the water supply can cover without killing off more of our natural…

Wish Linda Mar Safeway had been the other Safeway in the survey, as lots of us in MMB and some in EG use it as their primary big store. For MMB it's closer, quicker, and there is no problem with bagging. I have seen a "Why wait for Wednesday" bumper sticker in the parking lot there a couple of times, so at least one other Coastsider.com fan shops there. Yes! to the Farmer's Markets and also to the local produce stands. With the "crude awakening" under way for many, local makes increasing sense. It…

Still and all, wouldn't we like candidates to broach these "natural" questions? They all know we can't possibly avoid thinking about associations among relatives, so shouldn't candidates state specific similarities and differences with their relatives clearly and up front? You forgot about the sins of Lou Papan, John. And Gina Papan said she supports AB 1991. I want to know who doesn't suck, if anyone. The small forest that has gone into the (authorized and unauthorized) superficial printed campaign…

Have midcoasters looked at the Gordon/Hill version of the SM County LCP update? Nothing will affect our daily lives more than the revised LCP.

Leonard,
Thanks, once again, for the Cortese-Knox review.
Every time I am reminded of these current hurdles, I think of the dozens of small incorporated cities in the state that get along decade after decade--all that I have in mind are smaller than the uninc. midcoast, many are smaller than either El Granada or Montara/Moss Beach, and quite a few are smaller than either Montara or Moss Beach. And most are much poorer than our communities.

Frank, A friend and I spent a couple of hours per day for the very few working days between the Appropriations Committee vote and yesterday's Assembly Floor session contacting out-of-area individuals and groups about the wholesale environmental exemptions in AB 1991. I have donated to a half dozen of these in a small way for many years. It was time well spent. We were asking that the groups add themselves to the coalition against AB 1991, contact their district legislators, and contact their members.…

"...commanding victory."
Laugh of the day. It took 5 hours of cajoling, arm-twisting, political dealing, and the like after the failure of the 4:30 PM vote to squeeze out the votes needed for passage. Clearly, a lot of Assembly members did not want to go on record for this embarrassing dog.

For those who still don't get the nature of the negative legislative precedent this bill creates, here, once again, is an excerpt from the Assembly legislative analyst's summary: "No Legislature may bind future Legislatures in any way. This bill cannot prohibit future bills creating exemptions from the state's environmental laws from being passed and signed into law. It cannot guarantee that the criteria established by this bill requiring that all three of the elements set forth be present in order…

The lies and scum-bagging are all HMB's. The web page is obviously a fabrication of their advisors--probably the Lanny Davis PR law firm or the lobbyist. Their points in the right-hand column have already been thoroughly rebutted. They appear there at this time to try to influence a public that is becoming aware of their misdeeds in giving a sweetheart deal to their favorite developer and in sweeping exemptions from environmental law for a private developper in the coastal zone. A bad city gets worse,…

"Great rhetoric... but just folly."
Is it crowded in that pickle barrel for the doggedly ignorant and naive?

Anyone who fought the Devil's Slide Bypass know how bad backroom-dealing Lou Papan was for the communities of Montara and Moss Beach. One wonders if his daughter is out of the same mold. As a decline-to-state voter, I'll be picking up the Democratic primary ballot next week because of this race. But AB 1991 is now. The next Assembly member for District 19 may have to take a position on any legal dust-up that might ensue if it passes and is signed, but that only side-tracks the need to derail the…

Because one has no background in applicable natural sciences or applied sciences and can only bring in the comments of additional oddballs to support their off-the-wall statements does not mean there are not real issues. Because one has fallen for the attempt to claim AB 1991 only applies to one property in HMB does not mean the unprecedented method for creating environmental exemptions embodied in the bill will not affect all of California. This kind of issue is why the people of the state voted…

More environmental and other outdoor groups are being added to the opposition. Because this bill flew under the radar until it was fully introduced (into the wrong committee for its content) in April, the word on it is still getting out. It is being hurried through the legislature, so if it cannot be killed today, it might at least be postponed for due consideration. Making the rest of the state aware continues to be important. If it makes it through the assembly, growing opposition can give it a…

What would I be shilling for? There will always be those wrapped up in their little local mercenary concerns and unable or unwilling to see the broader negative consequences of their actions. To oppose their self-centered actions doesn't mean someone is trying to sell something of one's own. It's sort of sad to run into those with a world view in which everyone is vying exclusively for their own economic interests. Some may recall my cautionary statement of a couple of weeks ago, suggesting those…

Most of the best California conservation groups I know are not coastal. They deal in such issues as forest, water, ag land, and desert conservation, overpopulation, park preservation, etc. They have probably not even heard of AB 1991 and its implications for them. So I'm contacting a variety, asking them to join in opposition to AB 1991 because of the model for wholesale overthrow of regulations that are not confined to Coastal Zone concerns. I'm asking that they do two things: 1. Join the list of…

What is wrong with local realtors on the midcoast and in HMB is that most (not all) are shills for overdevelopment, overpopulation, and destruction of local resources. The few who aren't operate very quietly. No one paying attention is fooled by support of select community causes for the sake of PR. That obvious ploy is used by businesses and their associations in almost every industry and area of government. Smile superficially to the public while eviscerating the future, in this instance by establishing…
