What would I like to see? An 'Ecology: Education Restoration Demonstration Research Centre'. [title needs a little work], a 'spur' from the coastside trail to encourage bike and walking, the existing ball fields and football [aka soccer] field(s) and 'neighbourhood garden' plots.

Pathetic and Sick! Chris Mickelsen, Jim Larimer and Clay Lambert have collectively set a new low in Coastside discourse. Coastsider.com did a public service in providing Ms Mickelsen's actual 'note'. I won't judge the demonstration of a lack of formal education by Mickelsen or the obvious envy of Mr. Lansing's education for I don't believe that that should be a prerequisite for public office. The lack of judgment demonstrated by Mickelsen should be a disqualifier for public office and deserves censure…

Love the new 'masthead' for Coastsider!

A thank you and congratulations to ALL who made this possible. This ranks right up there with the setting aside of the current State Park lands and the maximum elevation for development on the hill sides for shaping the future livability here. The 'next generation' needs to stop the effort to re-allocate the development allocations from this property and the gutting rewrite of our LCP/LUP in the next two years till we can see a realignment of the City Council majority. We live in an area with a precarious…

I am going to guess that it is a mako looking at the lower teeth, dorsal and tail taper.
Dean, what do you think it is?
Any experts out there?

I took the liberty of recommending to Janet Gatti, RJ Gatti Associates, as part of the CUSD search process include you two [Clay Lambert; Barry Parr] for the final Superintendent candidates' community evaluation. I doubt that will be done. If so, you will be the only members of the 'public' included. There were only two members of the 'public' at the 'forum' nor were they prepared for more than four. With two, she was able to perceive the dichotomy in our community. The input today included the unions,…

Good News: Bayless is going; Bad News: the same people who gave him a substantial raise in secret will choose his repalcement! The first sign of a problem is that the CUSD Board, in a "SPECIAL MEETING", will choose @0830 today the firm that will 'find' his replacement. Copy of my remarks to the Board: Re: SPECIAL GOVERNING BOARD MEETING, Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at 0830 Comments: "The Governing Board will select a search firm to assist in the recruitment of a Superintendent." Good morning, I wish…

Sam,
Actually, we generally agree: Mandarin 1st choice, Cantonese 2nd choice for early immersion. My kids benefited from their immersion in Greek - different alphabet and symbols - like little sponges. Either Chinese dialect(s) would 'sharpen the ear' which is difficult for an adult from the western world to master.

Are the Latino students benefiting? 42% of the Latino "English Language Learner" students, who have attended CUSD schools from Kindergarten thru High School, never become "Fluent English Proficient"! There should be roughly 120 Latino students in High School now who went through the program. If it worked for them as described, they would be "Fluent English Proficient" achieving at the Proficient or above level in both English and Math. Are they and their parents supporting this program? Are the University…

Kevin, No Problem! - CUSD is already building Cunha TWICE the size needed for the anticipated enrolment on the scheduled completion date. And with the current rate of 'economic flight' FROM CUSD schools, there is plenty of excess space! With Anglo kids underperforming 50 - 100 points and Latino kids 100 - 200 points from where they might be, there will be even more space available in CUSD schools in the future. The only shortage on the coastside is available space in private schools!…

Correction, since Measure K was on the ballot on 4Jun96, enrolment at Cunha was 875.
Sorry,

Kevin,
Well done letter of Appeal of Cunha CDP, except for using one unreliable source -- The Review.
Current enrolment at Cunha is roughly 700 students. Enrolment was 956 a decade ago when the bond was passed.
Cunha Time Series of Enrolment
I trust the reporting of the California Department of Education, never The Review!

A thank you to the thousands who voted for me - I am sincerely grateful. A special thank you to supporters and volunteers - I am impressed, especially by those for whom it represented a 'Profile in Courage'. And a very special thank you to CUSD staff and teachers who opened up for unfiltered discussion of our schools and the problems. We have some excellent teachers who are dedicated professionals and deserve far better. Coastsider, Barry and Darin video efforts have offered an immense service to…

Some random observations: First, thanks to Bob -- technically, I didn't finish last. OTOH, he did break my lowest cost per vote record. For those who whine and wail about you can't get a 'super majority' [2/3] on the coastside, look at the percentage above for LA HONDA-PESCADERO UNIFIED SCHOOL District. CUSD can't get to two-thirds - duh! There is an inverse relationship between the direct communication of a candidate and the vote - here. Not one of the "incumbent slate", unless you include Charlie…

Barry, A few suggestions in light of some of the above comments: if someone types "FACT", they should be presented an option box: enter a URL to a verifiable document or the choice of one of the following alternative entries: hearsay, rumor, slander, opinion... Never mind, it would eliminate a substantial part of the above that are so tragically challenged. It must be so much easier and faster for the opposition: just make something up and call it a "fact'. Many of us are actually wasting time and…

FLASH There seems to be the usual disinformation campaign underway from the 'usual' source. Enrolment CUSD last year 3,507 Enrolment CUSD this year 3,288 You can confirm my statement: "we started this September with just fewer than 3,300 students." http://hmbreview.com/articles/2006/10/19/news/editorial/story2.txt Roy Salume serves as a trustee for the Cabrillo Unified School District. Surprise, usual disinformation desperate campaign source, is the same one who suppressed the public release of the…

Ray Olson, Would I be "Obstructive" if: Jolanda wanted to move the middle school site back to Wavecrest after the election; Dwight and Jolanda wanted to approve contracts in secret again, ignoring state law; Dwight and Jolanda wanted to again suppress public documents; Dwight and Jolanda wanted again to approve non competitive bids and cut out local business people; Yeah! My hope is that it is an incumbent free zone! With that said; I welcome all reasoned open rational legal discussion. Sometimes…

Don Bacon, Regarding the 'Incumbent Slate": one absent is a scheduling problem, two is a coincidence, three absent is a BOYCOT! With the exception of Kings Mountain, ALL the at the school, 'meet the candidates' were canceled! Superintendent Bayless 'commanded contact at schools only through him'! Remember, that he received a SECRET new contract signed by the two incumbents! Superintendent Bayless and Board President Jolanda Schreurs suppressed this year's enrolment report! A 6.7% drop! "Aren’t…

Matt Berman, Thank you for commenting, it gives me the opportunity to apologize for my apparent lack of sensitivity. As I had mentioned, I had also previously lived in the hurricane affected area and said thanks that mine were safe and pray that for you and all others here were so blessed. I should have, at a minimum, put it in the context that the comment had originated in the hurricane affected area speaking of their own school system. Those who have survived a personal tragedy, on occasion, develop…
