Sheriff’s log: Feb. 25 to Mar. 2

By on Tue, March 8, 2005

This week, the unincorporated midcoast had a residential and an auto burglary, a car theft, trailer fire, and a bike theft.

In the previous log, it was reported that a banner featuring a "terrorist threat" was found in El Granada.

Two unidentified females came into the Sheriff’s North Coast Substation to turn in a banner that had terrorist threats painted on it. The females removed the banner from a tree located on Francisco Avenue. A report has been taken and the incident will be investigated.

According to Sgt. Jerry Quinlan at the Sheriff’s detective bureau, the banner said a particular person (unnamed by the Sheriff) "supported animal torture".  It was hung from a tree near El Granada Elementary School. The case is not being investigated as a terrorist threat, but the organization whose name appears on a banner (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty) had some history that heightened interest in the banner. The organization is targeting a lab in the UK with protests against many of its suppliers and customers.

it's now painted white.

The county’s enforcement of its billboard ordinances on Highway 92 outside of Half Moon Bay has begun to show some effects.

The sign on the Berta property promoting Rogue Chefs, and the sign on Cozzolino’s promoting Spyglass have been removed. The enforcement also targeted one more community-oriented billboard. The Coastal Repertory Theatre sign on Highway 92 was removed after the property owner was notified. The huge sign added over the Presidents’ Day Weekend, which prompted our original call to the County, has been painted over.

According to Jim Eggemeyer, Interim Planning Adminstrator at the San Mateo County Planning Department, three or four other property owners have been been mailed notification that the signs on their property are in violation, but the county has not yet received the receipts from the postal service.

Larry Hassett’s journey from MROSD critic to its president

By on Mon, March 7, 2005

The Merc has a story about Larry Hassett, owner of Ocean Shore Hardware and president of the MROSD. It covers a lot of the same ground as the County Times story, including his journey from critic to president of the district. It includes a short sidebar of vital facts.

As a homeowner on rural Skyline Boulevard, he feared the district would use its powers to forcibly acquire his land—and the energy-efficient home he notched into the hillside and covered with earth. He led the opposition that persuaded the district to limit private property acquisition.
