Coastsider interviews the guy who writes the Review's editorial corrections
mal.comX, Aug 21, 2005 at 8:50pm

Some people might have missed the subtlety of Barry filing this story under the “Humor” category. That category is entirely appropriate in this case, because the Review itself is a joke when it comes to responsible reporting and editorial…

State to tow whale carcass away
Steve Skinner, Aug 19, 2005 at 9:20pm

Great story, I especially liked the video of what happened up in Oregon.  At any rate, it is Friday Aug. 19 and the whale, or what is left of it, is still on the beach…...

HMB Review's editorial is not even wrong
David Mayes, Aug 17, 2005 at 7:30pm

I wish I had been the one to first congratulate The Coastsider for this necessary skewering of the publisher of the Half Moon Bay Review…. It must be terribly embarrassing for Deborah to be shown to be so utterly lacking. Barry Parr deserves our…

Good fences make good neighbors, but bad fences make bad neighborhoods
Leonard Woren, Aug 14, 2005 at 10:47pm

When I was 14 we moved into an old house in a small city in the L.A. area.  I was used to 5 foot high block walls around every back yard, but this new neighborhood was quite interesting—there were few side yard fences.  (Nearly everyone…

HMB Review's editorial is not even wrong
ken king, Aug 14, 2005 at 9:55pm

Gratuitously mentioning someone’s name 3 times in the Review’s backhanded editorial is the old “Man does not beat his wife!” ploy. Good job, Barry, and great quotes!...

HMB bilingual outreach librarian receives national honors
Janet Zich, Aug 6, 2005 at 6:59pm

This is a well deserved honor. Armando Ramirez is—can this be an oxymoron?—an exciting librarian.  I’ve seen few public librarians rev up the patrons, children and adults, the way he does. He is a treasure. I hope HMB and the Coastside…

Monterey County court rules 1907 subdivision is still valid
westofeast, Aug 6, 2005 at 3:08pm

As we’ve seen just this past week, county superior courts do not always apply the law as it’s written, and it’s been up to the appeals courts to correct the lower courts. Antiquated subdivision maps are exactly that, antiquated. …

Good fences make good neighbors, but bad fences make bad neighborhoods
DavidE, Aug 3, 2005 at 2:01am

I understand the intent here, but restricting pickets fences does not make a lot of sense to me.  I find picket fences far more attractive than wire mesh fences.  When we bought our house in La Honda it had a solid wood fence across 2/3 of the…

Accident on Highway 1 in Moss Beach/Montara kills one, seriously injures another
David Mayes, Aug 1, 2005 at 5:40pm

rjk, Montara Mike and I have also discussed this at length…We fully expected that a tragedy like last week’s was inevitable. We have needed to turn left onto Carlos heading southbound to exit to our home. It was either a moving complete turn…

Half Moon Bay wins big wetlands case against Beachwood
jlundell, Jul 29, 2005 at 11:21am

This decision is probably also significant for Wavecrest, where the developer’s hired biologist tried to argue that hydric soils alone weren’t enough to classify much of the Wavecrest property as a wetland. Wavecrest’s original maps…

Accident on Highway 1 in Moss Beach/Montara kills one, seriously injures another
Leonard Woren, Jul 28, 2005 at 9:56pm

In driver training in high school, I was taught that you NEVER turn the wheels until you will be able to start and complete the turn.  Otherwise, you WILL be pushed into oncoming traffic if you’re hit from behind.  This applies to any…

Accident on Highway 1 in Moss Beach/Montara kills one, seriously injures another
Hal Bogner, Jul 27, 2005 at 12:36pm

I believe that we ought to alter Highway 1 in a very simple way to reduce the chance of tragic accidents like this, and that it can be achieved at a very low cost, and very much in keeping with the rural character of the coastside. For almost the entire…

Accident on Highway 1 in Moss Beach/Montara kills one, seriously injures another
Montara1980, Jul 27, 2005 at 11:11am

I am not blaming the people who were hit as a result of driver error, only the driver who hit them.  These accidents, though having occured in an area that has proved to be a dangerous one when it comes to left hand turns, could have been avoided…

Accident on Highway 1 in Moss Beach/Montara kills one, seriously injures another
Barry Parr, Jul 27, 2005 at 10:48am

Montara1980: I’d wager there’s a lot more traffic on the road than there was in 1980, both locals and tourists. Clearly, driver error played a role here. I wouldn’t be so quick to blame the now-dead left-turning driver because we don’t…

David Mayes, Jul 27, 2005 at 10:13am

Left turns in either direction off of Highway One in the area of Carlos, the Hostel, and 16th are dangerous beyond belief. I have discussed this with my wife, and we now agree that unless the left turn can be completed without stopping for oncoming traffic…

Accident on Highway 1 in Moss Beach/Montara kills one, seriously injures another
Montara1980, Jul 27, 2005 at 9:43am

One thing we must all consider here is that yes, this is a dangerous place in which to make a left turn off of the highway without the availability of a turn lane, but more importantly, driver error needs to be criticized here, not simply the road. …

Accident on Highway 1 in Moss Beach/Montara kills one, seriously injures another

Farmers' opposition holds up coastal trail
Barry Parr, Jul 23, 2005 at 11:32am

The Pescadero Municipal Advisory Council sent me a copy of a letter they sent to the Coastal Commission about the trail. HMB has an encouraging meeting with state agencies in the park
Leonard Woren, Jul 22, 2005 at 7:31pm
