The stellar musicians of the Trio Cabrillo will perform Haydn, Beethoven and Schumann piano trios Sunday, November 13th, at 4:30 p.m. as a benefit for the Coastside Community Orchestra. Proceeds will fund scholarships for music students on the coast.

Charles Calvert, cello, Robert Shultz, piano, and Bruce Yu, violin will play Haydn’s C major trio, Schumann’s Trio No. 3 in G Minor and Beethoven’s “Ghost” Piano Trio in D Major. The Beethoven trio was nicknamed “Ghost” because its eerie second movement was originally written for Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Charles Calvert is principal cellist with the Coastside Community Orchestra and with Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra. He was the youngest member of the Sacramento Symphony when he first played with the group alongside his teacher, August Heilbron.

Robert Schultz played with the San Francisco Symphony under Arthur Fiedler and has also played with the Oakland, Fresno and Peninsula symphonies. He was the featured soloist in the second Saint-Saëns piano concerto with the Coastside Community Orchestra in 2009.

Bruce Yu began studying violin at age five in Chicago and became assistant concertmaster of the Chicago Youth Symphony under Michael Morgan. He won the Student Soloist Award at Stanford and soloed with the Stanford Symphony Orchestra.

Three students of Shely Pack Dancers won state honors last weekend by practically sweeping the annual Dance Masters of California dance competition in Santa Clara assuring their entry into the Dance Masters of America’s Annual Convention and Competition in Anaheim this upcoming July.

Jasmine Franklin won the title of Petite Miss Dance of California; Gabrielle Pariseau won the Teen Miss Dance of California title; and Matlynn Henry garnered the title of Miss Dance of California!

Dance Masters of America has been in existence in one form or another since 1884, when the American National Association Masters of Dancing was founded in Boston, MA. and in 1894, the International Masters of Dancing held its first convention in St. Louis, MO.   In 1926 the two groups were combined and became the Dancing Masters of America (which was later changed to Dance Masters of America in 1948). This prestigious group brings thousand of young dance students together every year to compete in their annual competition. The Shely Pack Dancers proudly lists as their accomplishments a Miss Dance of America 2000; Mr. Dance of America 2003; Teen Mr Dance of America 2001 & 2006, and Jr. Mr. Dance of America 2009.

The George Cole Quintet style has been dubbed “Eurocana”, a celebration of the great American songbook inspired by the dynamic string-driven swing created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in 1930s Paris. In addition to new material, they will be playing from their CD Riverside Drive which captures the essence of classic Thirties tunes but maintains a modern sensibility.

Dan Haggerty and Lisa Ketcham, and Laura Stein have been elected to the Midcoast Community Council, as of 11pm, with 9 of 9 precincts reporting.

Stein’s slender margin of victory (six votes) was nonetheless a significant achievement. She was running as a write-in candidate. Stein tied fourth-place finisher Leonard W. Stone II in mail-in votes, with 302 votes. But she gathered eight more votes than Stone on election day.

With Stein’s narrow margin of victory, a recount is likely.

CORRECTION: Dennis Paull emailed us a more accurate interpretation of last night’s results:

The vote counting isn’t done yet. Late arriving absentee ballots (via the mail or at the polls) and paper ballots cast at the polls as well as the provisional ballots remain to be counted. This will probably be done today through next Monday.

Then there will be a 1% manual tally late next week most likely followed by the ‘official’ count certified within the next 3 or 4 weeks. Only after that will there be a recount if Stone wants to pay for it, or by Laura if the lead changes and she wants to pay for it. Since the turnout was low, there are not a lot of ballots to count.

Adopt A Family at Coastside Hope is starting up for the Christmas season.

The program will help bring Christmas gifts to about 400 Coastside families again this year. This includes seniors and Pescadero residents as well as Half Moon Bay families.

Last year almost 800 children were served by the program. The program will open in our Princeton warehouse at 214 Harvard on November 29th. I am attaching a form for anyone who is interested in adopting a family or making a financial contribution.

I had an opportunity to interview each of the candidates for the Midcoast Community Council over the weekend. In addition to providing Coastsider readers with an opportunity to hear the candidates for themselves, I was able to draw a few conclusions of my own.

Lisa Ketcham is on the board of the Pillar Ridge Homeowners’ Association. She has been a leader in her neighborhood for a decade. She worked successfully to keep the mobile home community affordable to low-income families. She’s the kind of community leader we should have on the MCC.

Laura Stein is a former member of the MCC, and is well-versed in the issues. But you’re going to have to work a little if you want to support her. Stein is a write-in candidate, and if you vote in person, you will have to request a paper ballot. It’s possible to vote for a write-in candidate using the county’s voting machine, but it’s difficult enough that you’re going to wish you’d asked for a paper ballot.

For the third seat, I recommend Dan Haggerty. He doesn’t have a long history of community involvement, but he is a volunteer with the Coastside Democrats. And he’s a better choice than either of his remaining opponents.

I enjoyed my conversation with Leonard Stone and could debate politics with him for hours. But he’s the Director of the San Mateo County Tea Party, and organization whose website speaks for itself. We discussed that in his recorded interview, and I recommend you listen to it, and check out his organization’s website. Leonard says he has an open mind about local issues and wants only to channel the desires of his neighbors. But he’s a local leader in an organization that has shown itself incapable of compromise and is involved in suppressing the right to vote nationwide.

John Oehlert has been involved in Half Moon Bay politics in years past, and is now a resident of Montara. I liked John. He’s smart and analytical. And I agree with many of the positions he took when he was in Half Moon Bay.

But he’s also a cipher. He’s the only candidate who has not listed his positions and endorsements on Smartvoter. He is running on a slate with Leonard Stone. I don’t know what it means to say you want to protect the Coastside environment for future generations while running with a leader in an organization that would dismantle the state and federal laws that protect the Coastside from exploitation.

Coastsider recommends you vote for Lisa Ketcham, Laura Stein (write-in), and Dan Haggerty.

Supervisor Don Horsley will appear at the Midcoast Community Council meeting on Wednesday, November 9, at 7:30 p.m. Supervisor Horsley is scheduled for 7:55.

Supervisor Horsley will attend and discuss several topics with the MCC. These items will include the following based on prior discussions at MCC meetings and input from the Supervisor. This discussion will continue in the MCC December 14 meeting:

• Update on Highway 1 Planning with emphasis on public inclusion in the process. Concerns range from the specifics of safe crossings to overall plans for the corridor. Item 1: status release and public comment on the draft report from the Highway 1 Safety and Mobility Study. Item 2: the roadmap for the Transportation Management Plan (per LCP update) that will include the Highway corridor that extends from the end of the Highway 1 freeway in Pacifica to Highway 92’s intersection with the 280 freeway.

• Princeton / Pillar Point Harbor: Item 1: Supervisor Horsley’s interest in overall “cleanup” of the area. Item 2: Treatment for the California Coastal Trail route through the area: Item 3: Harbor District office plans, environmental health of the harbor and the Supervisor’s interest to address issues in Princeton. Item 4: Supervisor Horsley’s recent comments on promoting “green business” in Pillar Point Item 5: Interest in maintaining the nature of the harbor and its commercial fishing. Item 6: Airport overlay planning process.

• Improving connection between the MCC and county departments. Item 1: Develop strong partnerships between MCC committees and county departments. Item 2: Consideration of a “forum” utilizing the video coverage of MCC meetings to provide open communication between county departments and the community.

With a structural deficit climbing to over $2.2 million and additional mid-year cuts from Sacramento looming on the horizon, the Cabrillo Unified School District board has scheduled three community study sessions to hear from its constituents.

All three of these community sessions will begin at 6:00 p.m. and precede regularly scheduled meetings on the following dates:

• Thursday, December 8, Farallone View Elementary School Multi-Use Room
• Thursday, January 12, HMBHS Multi-Use Room (pending Board adoption of 2012 meeting schedule)
