The county elections office has sent a replacement ballot and instuctions to voters on the Midcoast who did not receive their mail-in ballots because they were misaddressed by the county.
All ballots, including replacement ballots, must be received by the county before the polls close at 8pm on Tuesday, June 8.

I’ll get to the regular version of Field Notes next week, but for now, I wanted to alert you to a couple of things happening at the Markets this week so you can plan accordingly. We are hoping to help our neighbors here, and those living along the beautiful and imperiled Gulf Coast in a couple of small but meaningful ways this week and you can help if you like.
School Superintendent Rob Gaskill sat down with Neil Merrilees to talk about Measure E, the proposed Parcel tax to fund the local school district, and to inaugurate Neil’s new show, Going Coastal with Neil Merrilees.
In this half hour video Gaskill explains the thinking behind the parcel tax ballot measure and makes his case why residents—both those with kids and without—should vote for it.
Marchi’s Central Farm’s labor camps have a history of repeated county health and safety violations stretching back more than forty years, reports Julia Scott in the County Times. Farmer and landlord "Red" Marchi currently houses about 100 tenants without a housing permit, and has a June 13 deadline to correct violations.
But Marchi’s record of substandard housing goes back decades.
- Marchi’s housing has passed inspections for a decade despite a lack of certified wall heaters, missing windows, broken smoke detectors, leaky plumbing, holes in the roof, dangerous electrical wiring and septic tank waste running into a nearby creek.
- A trailer caught fire at a camp on Bean Hollow Road in 2002 from a towel thrown over a bare light bulb. Yet bare light bulbs are still a pervasive problem, as noted by inspectors as recently as April 2010.
- It took Marchi’s Central Farm six years to replace a dangerous trailer with illegal sewage and electrical connections starting in 1982. The farm continued to house employees there even after the county began denying operating permits for the site.
[...]Records show the Environmental Health Division has issued annual housing permits to Marchi’s camps automatically, without follow-up inspections to ensure problems were being dealt with.
Employee housing inspection reports show a nearly identical list of violations for 2009 and 2010 at two of Marchi’s camps. Yet they were still
able to obtain housing permits from the county.

Along with teachers, councilors, librarians & support staff; coastside students will be the most severely impacted by the proposed cuts if Measure E does not succeed.

HI There Marketeers!
I was preparing for the early mail run this morning when it occurred to me to remind y’all that we are having the first of our blood drives this season on Saturday. I think it was finding my ballot in my collection of re-usable grocery bags in the trunk of my car that triggered my memory, so the other reminder is don’t forget to vote.
At any rate, the Bloodmobile is on the way, so if you are a donor or want to become one in honor of Memorial Day, why then make an appointment here, and we’ll all be happy. Especially Santiago, who will sing to you when you are finished, and feed you oranges to perk you up. Paul might feed you cherries, too. And if that’s not enough for you, Jennie Schacht, author of Farmers’ Market Desserts will be on hand to offer suggestions for all sorts of blood-sugar balancing delights that will level you out. Plus, thanks to our local chapter of the Oddfellows, the Don Rowell Trio is popping over the slide from Pacifica, and those lush jazz standards should soothe your soul.
If none of that does it for you, then I suggest you grab a baguette from James, a nice chunk of Dee Harley’s Ricotta, a handful of Josie’s apricots, a bunch of mint and a bottle of James Blond white balsamic and make yourself an astonishing little breakfast when you get home.
The Coastside Music Fest, a free music festival, will be Saturday, May 29 from 11am to 7pm.
The CMF will be at Pillar Point Harbor on the open lot directly across from the HMB Brewing Co. and adjacent to Barbara’s Fish Trap.
This is a full-scaled family event complete with pony rides, animals, bouncy slides and houses, art and craft vendors, food vendors and of course music. Proceeds go to the American Legion Post 474 and the Half Moon Bay 4-H club.
The musical line-up are some of California’s best and well-known tribute acts and guitarists and they include:
Jazzy listening set and dancing second set to Soul/Funk/Blues with singer, songwriter, producer, musician Fred Ross has toured the world with the legendary funksters Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley (formerly of the James Brown band.)
Fred has also recorded with Aretha Franklin, whose CD went gold, Narada Michael Walden, members of Tower of Power, Santana, Chakra Kahn and The Commodores to name a few. Currently Fred is touring the US and Europe as lead vocalist with Everyday People performing a tribute to the music of Sly & The Family Stone and more.
