I appreciate the desire for a place for dogs to be off-leash. However, in my experience, few of the off-leash walkers in Montara (Rancho Corral de Tierra) have any sort of control over their dogs. I've walked two different dogs, each of whom had social issues, in the area over the last ten years. One, a large akita mix, would get aggressive with dogs that approached him. The other, a smallish basenji mix rescued from the streets, is terrified of other dogs. I can't tell you how many owners let their…

I don't think all the weed killers being used are glyphosate, but this is an issue.
I'm also noticing private property where drainage ditches and stream banks have been obviously treated with herbicide. Once you start noticing it, it's hard to miss.

Grant:
Thank you for doing this for the community.
We picked up our records last weekend and it was fast and friendly.

UPDATE: We quoted MCTV attorney and spokesman Mike Day as saying "We have indicated in the past that MCTV can serve as a means to transmit public safety information to the community ... However, if we do not receive any communication from the governmental agencies, it is obviously not possible for MCTV to disseminate such information" It turns out that MCTV was not on the Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services media contact list. Lieutenant Ray Lunny, Public Information Officer for the Sheriff's…

MCTV gets about $100,000 a year from cable fees and recording fees from public agencies. Last year, the county grand jury criticized MCTV for poor quality programming, a failure to communicate with the community, restriction of reuse of programs it produces with public money, and the elimination of a public voice in the station’s management. https://coastsider.com/index.php/site/news/grand_jury_blames_lack_of_oversight_for_mctvs_poor_quality_programming/ MCTV reaches about half the homes in the…

First I want to thank Carl for letting me pin a target on him and promote his comment to the home page with an illustration he didn't pick. I know he can handle the heat, but it's unfair to criticize anyone's opinion just because they didn't attend the meeting. There's a lot to like in the study. Highway 1 needs to be slowed down inside our communities. Kids and adults should to be able bike safely between Montara and Half Moon Bay and beyond. People who live on the east side of the highway need…

Yeah, that AB1991. Are you suggesting voting against the parcel tax because the school board endorsed AB1991?
February 26, 2010
This is not like the phony-baloney threat we got from Half Moon Bay in their effort to pass AB1991.
I'm no fan of the board, but they're up against it right now. A longer list of reductions considered by the administration can be found here:

First, I agree with Kevin that Julia's use of "Some observers said event organizer Mavericks Surf Ventures fell short of its responsibility to protect spectators, ..." wasn't journalism.
However, it wouldn't be difficult to find some observers who would say that.
But...Katie Couric? Really? You're not still smarting over those interviews with Sarah are you?

I've been on a couple of these events put on by the Land Trust and they're really great.
I'm not a birder, but I learned a lot about the Coastside's environment and why people come from all over the Bay Area to see the raptors at Wavecrest.
I drove past Wavecrest for years without realizing how large, natural and beautiful the site is.

Traffic on Hwy 92 wasn't too bad. Traffic on 1 on the Coastside was pretty brutal all afternoon:

I'm a big believer in individual responsibility.
However, Mavericks clearly encouraged people to enter the danger zone and likely did so with the permission of the property owners.

Of course, a number of these items will have to be negotiated with the employees' union, so they not necessarily something the district can choose to do on their own.

I passed this on to Rich Gordon's office, and received the following reply from Matt Jacobs in his office:First, regarding noise, during business hours, contact the San Mateo County Environmental Health Department. Their phone number is (650) 372-6200. For after hours, contact the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office at 650.363.4911. In regard to the littered property they should contact the County's Code Enforcement office at 650.363.4825. However, if you could get me the address, I can contact code…

Kevin Barron suggested earlier that this beach isn't *that* polluted. I just posted a video from Ian Butler that suggests otherwise.

Kevin, do you support the current at-large system for electing Supervisors? If so, I'd be interested in hearing a defense of the system from you or anyone else who thinks it works. Race: Wikipedia says the racial makeup of the county was 46.1% White, 3.51% Black or African American, 0.44% Native American, 20.04% Asian, 1.5% Pacific Islander, 8.4% from other races, and 3.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 23.4% of the population. You don't have to play the race card to…

Fixed. Thanks for asking.

Update: The HMB Police shot and killed the animal.
"We only had a little perimeter set up and it could have escaped at any time," O'Keefe said. "Our officers at the scene had to consider public safety paramount. Children were getting out of school soon and many of them come passing through open fields in that area. These animals are known to be very aggressive, and the size of this one was pretty scary, too."

Not clear, but at 350lb it's huge.
Headline corrected.

I fixed the link.
I can't speak to whether the entire beach was covered, but only to what the Mr. Butler observed. The mess in the photo looks unacceptable on a public beach.
Kevin, you seem be uncomfortable with peer-reviewed research as a source of empirical evidence.
