Mike, thanks for dropping by. I looked for your name and contact info on the site, and I'm glad to close the loop.
Also, thanks for pulling out this clip.
I know that golf makes a lot of greens see red. I also understand why. It's harder to understand the impulse to bulldoze a public amenity that clearly appeals to a broad range of users. It's interesting to see the science in support of keeping the course as beneficial to endangered species.

Joel, I reported the fine using an impartial source, I've made the FPPC letter available to the community, and (unlike you) quoted liberally from it.
It's time for the readers to decide whether they prefer my approach or your use of context-free scare phrases. They should also ask themselves whether you hold yourself to the same standard of accuracy and fairness to which you hold others.
I'm comfortable with their judgement.

I'm glad to see the MCC take up this issue. This is not only about safe crossings, but about the integrity of the communities of Montara and Moss Beach. The solutions that are chosen will have a big impact on the livability of the Midcoast.

George, you should really take the time to read what Joel actually wrote.
He quoted the phrase "intent to deceive" twice. You know as well as I do that this is not what the LCP was fined for.
January 21, 2010
You either don't understand what you read, or you're trying to pull a fast one. "Intent to deceive" is a potential aggravating factor, not the "standard". The letter clearly states that in determining a penalty, the commission considers "the presence or lack of intent to deceive the voting public; " You removed the phrase "presence or lack" from your out-of-context quote and clearly suggested (twice) that the phrase was part of the finding. It was not. The FPPC found that the LCP violated the Act,…

Joel, what are your talking about? You wrote: btw, while true that the fine was well below the $10,000 limit, it’s also true that the ruling discussed the “intent to deceive the voting public.” and a regulatory agency assessed penalties when it found people (or organizations) guilty of “intent to deceive the voting public.” The only use of the phrase "intent to deceive" in the decision is here: Additionally, the Enforcement Division considers the facts and circumstances of the violation…

Even in our polarized community, Brian is something special. He's the only person in the community that we've had to put on permanent pre-moderation. Too many baseless accusations.
January 20, 2010
Joel makes a good point about Brian's work in youth sports.
However, to many Coastsiders, Brian is known mostly for his deliberately provocative and often disingenuous posts here and over at the Review.
Such a polarizing person a surprising nomination for someone (Kowalcyk) who pledged to bridge the divide in the community.
To clarify, I don't write the titles people put on their letters.

Joel, since the LCP put their names on Voice of the Coast, it's hard to argue that there was in intent to deceive anyone. This looks more like a technical violation following some bad advice from the FPPC itself. From the County Times: Documents show [the FPPC] was inclined toward leniency because the League for Coastside Protection had contacted the commission during the 2005 election to seek advice on publishing the Voice of the Coast and because the group did print its name and committee identification…

I saw plenty of limbs (one the size of a tree anywhere else) down, as well as one fence, on a short walk in Montara this afternoon. Also saw an AT&T truck cruising the neighborhood.

Winner-take-all is a big problem at all levels of government. Another example is that if you're not in a "battleground" state, your vote in the presidential election is pretty meaningless. Proportional representation is one solution to that problem. Of course, the last person who achieved prominence after making that suggestion was labeled a "quota queen" by the Republicans. One-party rule in San Mateo County has not been good for the Democrats or their values. I would support a system that would…

The fact that the Coastside is only 3% of the county's population is the problem. The Board of Supervisors affects day-to-day life here far more than it does the other 95% of the county that is incorporated. People in, say, Daly City or San Mateo directly elect their own city councils and can serve on their own planning commissions. We're dependent on the County. But the folks in DC and SM have far more influence on the Board of Supervisors than we do. That's not democracy as I understand it. We're…

Good suggestion. I've made it easier to view by embedding the YouTube video in the page.

OK, it's working now. I picked up a couple of extraneous carriage returns from the press release.

You may be right. Besides, it would be impossible to "stick it to Bush" sufficiently to fulfill his karmic destiny over New Orleans. However, New Orleans holds a unique place in our cultural heritage, which is one reason it might be worth preserving. It was also a victim of federal misfeasance both in maintenance of its levees and the response to the disaster. Also, abandoning entire cities is a completely different thing from abandoning apartment buildings or even towns built in the wrong place.…

This was the only report I've received. In the past, it has been suggested that "mountain lion" sightings in this area are actually bobcats:

I don't understand how the current process accounts for the collateral damage of coastal armoring: 1. The loss of public property as the armoring causes wave action to remove the beach. 2. The loss of private property as the armoring causes erosion to adjoining bluffs. This is to say nothing of the cascade effect as armoring leads to more armoring on additional properties. There's a growing understanding that people who live in flood plains and barrier islands should not be allowed to use (often…

I really only got to know June well last year, and I'm still in shock. She came to our holiday party and we exchanged New Year's messages, she's fresh in my memory.
After Burt's death, she invited us to a wonderful service in her home. It was the kind of event that made us glad to be alive, rather than sorrowful at a loss. Now is a good time to remember that.
I wish I knew her better.

I get the blame for Leonard's html problem. It took me a while to diagnose, but my list of safe html got nuked in my most recent software upgrade.
This has now been fixed.

It wasn't planned that way, but that's how it turned out.
We expect to ramp up to our normal level of activity over the next couple of days.
