Although a major reason for the collapsing salmon population is the diversion of water for agriculture.

I can't believe how scary that must have been. It's definitely a good idea to stay off the Slide for the time being.
It has been difficult to get accurate reports of the current status of the road. It's probably best to assume its closed if you're coming to the Coastside.

Here's a contribution from author June Morrall: Princeton-by-the-Sea is a place filled with legends and tall tales. An oft-asked question: Who burned down the beloved Crab Cottage? As the legend goes, John and Slim were two characters that slept in a wood pile. They didn't bother anyone....unless having way too much to drink counts. One day John and Slim woke up and heard from a passerby that the Crab Cottage wasn't open for breakfast that morning. The Crab Cottage was always open for breakfast and…

I haven't talked to POST, but they may have been interested in connecting the property to some other land they'd already bought. That seems to be one of their goals in acquisitions. Whenever they buy a piece of land, they always discuss what it connects to. I'm sure it makes the land easier to manage and provides other benefits, such as continuous trails. Obviously, POST does not preclude farming. They seem very proud of the fact that Joe Muzzi farms some of their property, and have purchased easements…

Leland Yee declared today that he's not running for Lantos's seat. However, there's still something unseemly about elected officials naming things (other than legislation) after one another. I found the Caltrans rule quoted above to be equally unseemly: When a resolution names a highway or structure in honor of an individual, the designee must have been deceased for at least 18 months, except in the instance of elected officials, in which case they must be out of office. ...In other words, elected…

For those of us who remember the way the Chronicle used to be, the sentence "Sadly, the Chronicle is not the paper it used to be." is a very damning statement indeed.
January 06, 2008
When you read the editorial, note that Chronicle's editorial board, like Judge Walker, does not know actually know what a "Catch-22" is.
Also, did you ever notice that the only time we hear about the insanity of civil judgments is when corporations are on the losing end?

Terry, does CCF have an estimate of the incremental cost of building the Bypass?
You're a director of CCF and the organization has taken a very public position, buying a full-page ad in the Review. What does CCF say this will cost and how did you arrive at the figure?
I know you've been waiting for Charlie to get back. Is he still gone?

The essence of Larimer's piece is that we wouldn't be having these problems if he (and a few people who think like him) were running the Coastside, with minimal input from citizens who agree with him (i.e. no "factions").
I agree there are big differences between the communities, and let's not forget that one Coastside city will be a non-starter with a large portion of HMB as well.

The fire department is a separate entity from the city, so they're safe. However, they may need a volunteer police department.
Just to be clear, however, we have no reason to believe that the decision to appeal the decision is any likelier to bankrupt the city than a decision not to appeal.

I don't think we should split this topic. All this stuff is tied together in any event and the ultimate resolution of this mess could cause a whole bunch of dominoes to fall: Beachwood, Pacific Ridge, Podesta, Terrace Ave, Foothill, Bayview, and more. That's certainly what CCF has in mind.
December 22, 2007
Terry, you seem to be saying CCF doesn't have an estimate of the net cost to the city of its recommended plan of action.
To answer your questions: I don't accept contributions. Coastsider is funded by my personal funds and supplemented by advertising. My mission is to understand the Coastside better by writing about it and to share what I know with the community. My motivation is to make the Coastside a better place and stronger community. My state charter is the first amendment.

Terry, as I mentioned to your CCF colleague Charlie Gardner elsewhere on Coastsider, I don't see how building a road on Beachwood helps the city one whit with the financial crisis brought on by Yamagiwa. How do taking the developable bits of Beachwood (for which Keenan will have to be compensated) to build a thoroughfare improve, rather than exacerbate, the problem? Charlie didn't answer me. I'm hoping you'll take a shot at it. I also don't understand how you can in good conscience suggest that the…

Terry, you're right, the city doesn't have a lot of time. What do you think they should do?
I've seen you involved down to the wire in enough hair-breadth elections to know you're not a capitulationist.
December 18, 2007
I don't agree with your preferred solution, but I don't think you've been participating in the divisive behavior we've seen from other folks.
How do you see the bypass solving the city's money problem with this decision?
December 18, 2007
That's what the judge said. The damages were based on the assumption that no houses at all can be built on Beachwood. If I remember correctly, Mr. Keenan was offered the option of building houses on the land, but decided he wasn't being allow to build enough. If a highway can be built on the land, why not houses? It's also not clear to me how build this road would help the city's money problem. After all, if they build a road instead of letting Keenan put up houses, they're going to owe him the value…

I just increased the type one point size. I think it improves the way the page looks and increases readability.
I also commend Suzanne's tip about increasing the type size using browser controls. Control (PC) or Command (Mac) and the "+" key to increase the size and "-" to decrease it. I use these all the time when I'm on the Web.

The spacing on the photos is already on my to-do list. I agree it's a problem. The classified problem is new, and I've moved it to to the top of the list with a couple of other bugs.
