Suzanne: There was a problem with the template when you were looking at it earlier.
This home page definitely looks better with photos and I think it does a better job of displaying them. You'll be seeing more photos.

The Gallery is down for unrelated repairs. We're working on the problem.

I got so tired of the poor reception of local broadcast channels, that I actually tried to contact one of the local channels to see if they could talk to Comcast.
Have you ever tried to talk to a TV station? I can't even find a real person or a phone number inside the organization. They make Comcast seem friendly.

Good question. I would have phrased Paul's question differently: "Are anonymous forums a good idea?", which I think is an interesting question.
The opinion piece he pointed to is one that I'd seen and thought was interesting and provocative. I came close to posting it here myself.

That's an interesting solution to allowing anonymous comments while creating a sense of personal responsibility. However, because Coastsider is about a place, because we know each other already, and because we have so many local public figures posting, I think it's important that we be willing to stand behind what we say. For example, if a member of a local board posts their own name, I want to know if the people responding to them are political opponents, concerned citizens, or the usual pack of…

Ken, I think it's important to separate your dim opinion of the Review from your feelings about anonymity in TalkAbout. Newspapers are trying to feel their way into some territory no one understands very well, and their failures aren't necessarily driven by an agenda. However, TalkAbout is a failed community -- Lord of the Flies without the personal responsibility. Coastsider allowed anonymous posts for the first 18 months of its existence. I got rid of them for a reason. I recall on TalkAbout post…

The number is (650)726-8820. I've corrected it in the story.

Paul's right. It's important to keep to the topic. It's better for the conversation, and it makes it easier for folks to find threads in the future if they're not all attached to a single story.

The new voting machines were not a good experience for me, either. The wheel and the big buttons are, I think, the result of the primary driver for voting machines: accessibility for the handicapped. Lots of brand-new user-interface ideas, and way-ugly graphics, were on exhibit in these machines and I was confused or lost a couple of times. To their credit, I adapted pretty fast. However, I'm certain that older voters had more problems with these gadgets. I'm going to see if I can get some poll workers…

As I said, "Judgment must be withheld until the facts have been determined." Something happened last Friday night. I'm waiting to find out the results of the district's investigation. I have seen no reports that team members were involved. Apparently the district has apologized. They were supposed to have concluded their investigation today. I called the district office today at 4:30pm to get the details, but have not heard back from them. My comments above were directed at the discussion on the…

I'm disturbed by the attitude of apparently adult HMB High School fans on the Review's website: http://talkabout.hmbreview.com/topic.php?t=878&c=11&d;= Many of the comments excuse the behavior, saying it's the result of mistreatment by other teams. And some bad calls by a water polo ref. One person describing himself as an HMB alumnus says, "I never knew what a "cracker" was until I played against Jefferson High School as a freshman and I had to be told that it was a racial slur against white people.…

Terry Gossett says, "I am not a member of Put Community First (PCF), but I follow their efforts to help the community, and am familiar with their bylaws and mission" I'm not surprised. Terry is on the board of Coastside Community First. PCF and CCF are part of a one-two punch: a tax-exempt educational organization and a non-exempt PAC. They were created at the same time, in May 2006. https://coastsider.com/index.php/site/news/new_coastside_organizations_will_promote_infrastructure_sensitive_to_the_en/…

I put their self-description in quotes, as I did with the LCP, and my words are my words. Like I said, you don't need a weatherman to tell which way they're blowing.
But I like your idea of establishing who they are and what they're up to.

I believe I didn't say that anyone in particular was engaged in a little harmless autoeroticism on TalkAbout. I said that the use of anonymity creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and casts a shadow on everyone's participation.
Sorry I missed you on your rounds of Montara.

It's instructive to read Richard Bulan's request for the endorsement of PCF. He says he wants its endorsement because “PCF is a respected organization with reputation for supporting the rights of citizens and the well-being of the community. As a family man, and as a businessman who seeks to be successful in the community, having the support of organizations who share my values is important to me."
You don't even need glasses to read between the lines.

That's one problem with anonymity.
You'll never know who's succumbed to the temptation to give themselves a pat on the back from anonymous admirer or two.

My time seems to be off by an hour as well. I suspect that my software has a problem with this year's new daylight savings time start date.

Terry, you raised the following issue:
What I do not understand is how you have such disdain for “anonymous trolls over at Talkabout” yet you embrace what I have referred to as “anonymous canaries” like those parties finding delinquent taxes by Bulan and by Slater-Carter and providing that info to HMB Review.
I gave you five clear differences between what we do here and what the Review does at TalkAbout. If you still don't understand, I don't know how to help you.

That's a fair question. There are at least five reasons why my use of material from anonymous sources is different from the anonymous gang behavior in TalkAbout: Responsibility: I take responsibility for anonymously-sourced material on the site. The Review doesn't take responsibility for the anonymous posters on its site. Accuracy: I won't run any anonymous material that I have not personally verified to be accurate. Security: Coastsiders have been physically intimidated by developers, contractors,…

Terry, you're right. An old friend of ours has posted a response to this endorsement over at TalkAbout. I'd reply to him there, but I've seen what the anonymous trolls over at TalkAbout do to people who try to reason with them. The TalkAbout crowd (both of them) are welcome to come over here and defend the Review, but they prefer the cloak of anonymity. Draw your own conclusions. Who but Brian Ginna could charm us in this fashion? Take the “endorsements” with a big heap of skepticism, even with…
