Letter: Why did MWSD appeal lawsuit?

May 13, 2009
"As far as legal costs go, I don’t have a clue which is why I asked. You think maybe $300k so its probably twice that...." If you don't have a clue by your own admission, why the assessment of the validity of the $300,000 figure in the very next sentence?

Maybe developer/builders and real estate types wouldn't step in it so often with their half-baked schemes if they bothered to learn about our surroundings from local experts like Toni Corelli? And their agida over self-manufactured concerns they can't even specify would surely be lowered by the great musical offerings we have on the coastside every week. Speaking hypothetically.

SFWeekly says HMB bonds would be ‘Vampire Bonds’

May 13, 2009
Okay, Mr. Barron, then confine yourself to the question asked about your reference to the term "environmentalism" with regard to this particular issue. Or is slinging cement randomly all you have?

SFWeekly says HMB bonds would be ‘Vampire Bonds’

May 12, 2009
How was "environmentalism" involved in the ongoing disputes, in the actual speculative investing by the developer, the governmental decisions and actions, and the legal wangling that make up Half Moon Bay's Beachwood mire? Or is the "environmentalism" term just lobbed out there as a handful of wet cement, hoping it will find a wall to stick to?

Letter: Science takes a hit in San Francisco’s rush to dump Sharp Park

April 27, 2009
Got to agree, this will test the meaning of the word "restore." How can one restore if not all the pieces have been saved? In addition to the golf course, let's not forget the Fairway Park subdivision occupying former habitat on both sides of the highway as well as all the other paved and roofed over landscape in the watershed. A better project might concentrate on enhancement of existing habitat. But the two species of animals, SFGS and red-legged frog, are only banner carriers. Enhancement of freshwater…

Pacifica has a community garden under way that may provide some encouragement for this idea: http://www.pacifica-gardens.org

MWSD honored for conservation efforts

Oops, it would help if I gave the link: http://info.sen.ca.gov/pub/07-08/bill/asm/ab_2151-2200/ab_2175_bill_20080818_amended_sen_v93.pdf

MWSD honored for conservation efforts

April 10, 2009
Bummed that we are no better in our house than average in per-capita use but proud to live in communities that are making a significant conservation effort. This bodes well for our capabilities during dry times. (Those wishing to convert the cubic feet on their bills to gallons should multiply by 7.481.) As an idea of how well we in MWSD are doing, see this legislation proposed at the state level last year. Being well below the 110 gallon per-capita usage level, we would not have to take any additional…

Letter: Delicious food at 7th Street Montara—locals’ discounts, too

March 20, 2009
Over in Town Hall I'm trying to start a thread on businesses of all kinds with "deals for locals." Would it be OK to copy this letter there?

Video: Understanding the Big Wave development in Princeton

February 05, 2009
The commercial office park/Big Wave scheme is on property that has wetlands issues. This property is in our coastal zone, and the Coastal Act, which the Coastal Commission enforces, has a number of requirements for development on and near wetlands. On this property, there was already an assault on wetlands in J.L.'s prior office park development effort, some of it undoubtedly involving his consultant, Ralph Osterling. Extensive cattails and bullrushes in the southwest quadrant were disced, allowing…

It is understood many aspects of a project this size cannot be covered in a short video. Many concerns for this piece of land were discussed a couple of decades ago when another developer, J.L Johnson, proposed a commercial project of a similar scale. Big Wave is not a project for the disabled with an ancillary commercial component, it is primarily a commercial project with a disabled component. The motivation for the effort is clear on the Big Wave website under Financial Considerations: http://www.bigwaveproject.org/wellness_center.html

Video: HMB director refuses to vacate chair of SAM

February 04, 2009
Apples and oranges. My comment is not about whom among their members the city and the special districts send to the SAM board but, rather, the SAM officers chosen by the designees on the SAM board.

Video: HMB director refuses to vacate chair of SAM

February 03, 2009
It didn't involve the two HMB City Council members now on the SAM board; but there were some similar games played in the 1990's by Old Guard council members to deny the usual informal rotation of the HMB Mayor position. So, if HMB tradition shows the sequence of such leadership positions is arbitrary in the city.... Maybe the State Board of Education has some guidelines on the conduct of government high-school style? Or, from a more pragmatic angle, has Barry's suggestion for consulting the lawyers…

Video: HMB director refuses to vacate chair of SAM

February 03, 2009
Do the SAM bylaws state current officers continue in their positions if there are tie votes? Another way I have seen this resolved is to declare there is no reigning officer if there is a stalemate and that the unresolved position rotates from meeting to meeting among board members. This prevents an unelected officer from hijacking control of the meetings (and the agenda?). (Tie votes on other matters mean the proposed action fails and the status quo continues--as with the failed wet weather project--correct?)…

How many people does a Supervisor represent?

January 31, 2009
I'm not running for anything, Vince. But you have run for local positions a couple of times based on your political and economic outlook. How did that work out? I'm sure you put a lot of thought into your abstract and unproven political hypotheses for the midcoast, and I wish you well in seeing one or two of them verified over time. In the meantime, they read like someone still trying to come to grips with the situation in our locality. Another 20 or 30 years of political serfdom under the county…

How many people does a Supervisor represent?

January 30, 2009
Funny how objective and entirely supportable comment on the county BOS and its individual members becomes "demonizing" in the eyes of some. Dealing with our county government on midcoast matters, the general rule is if you aren't compliant and don't kiss butt, you get your butt kicked. Unless you are a developer/builder. The only thing that will make a damn bit of difference is on that front is better supervisors. In the meantime, maybe forever, we need to preserve what precious little self-determination…

Letter: Conflict at the MCC

January 23, 2009
If it is all perception, fuzz, and smell, why do the Supervisors feel they need a formal resolution drafted by County Counsel to legally dictate a change to qualifications for service on the MCC? Darin's message falls apart when one considers the multiple boards, many with budgetary and other decision-making powers, that county supervisors and city council members serve on in San Mateo County and regionally. To wear such multiple hats while trying to forbid a situation with much less actual and potential…

Supervisor Gordon will be at MCC to speak on Midcoast representation, Weds

January 22, 2009
The "Growth Ethic," the notion that there must be growth (of population and accompanying development) of some magnitude or else human endeavor will die, requires Cornucopians, believers that magic supplies of what people need for their lives will always appear. Cornucopians come in all sizes. Some have large, fast-producing Horns of Plenty, some have smaller, slow-producing ones they try to pass off as "compromises." But all Horns are works of imagination, of fiction, and dependence on them is irresponsible…

Supervisor Gordon will be at MCC to speak on Midcoast representation, Weds

January 21, 2009
"Let’s see…3 1/2 hour meetings times 24 meetings a year times another couple hours processing the tapes…what is that? 168 hours—over four work weeks—a year working for free to bring the MCC meetings to the community?" The MCC members I worked with on committees in the past put in a lot more than this. I wasn't involved with it, but when there was an active Planning and Zoning Committee, it required a huge amount of background work and meeting time. I don't think some relative newcomers…

Supervisor Gordon will be at MCC to speak on Midcoast representation, Weds

January 13, 2009
Again, there is no heightened conflict between sitting on the MCC and being a special district director. In fact, any potential conflict here is, on its face and in scope, less than when select supervisors or city council members sit on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, ABAG, California Coastal Commission (which requires that some members be elected officials), regional water boards, LAFCO, SAMTRANS board, and on and on. On every such board, the potential exists for a supervisor or council…
