New look Montara Beach website.

July 23, 2009
I agree Kevin - fantastic re-design! By the way, I got a facebook alert to a clean-up at Montara Beach this Saturday. Is this one of yours? With all the state budget news, I'm thinking we may want to do them once a month just to stay on top of things. Again - thanks for a fantastic site!

That last comment was from me not Barry! Happens when you share a laptop!

Album: Ol’ Fashioned Fourth of July Parade, 2009

Thanks Suzanne. I'm pretty sure his owner said he is a Pomeranian. He was sitting in this little clearing with all the chaos of the parade happening all around him. Between the puppies and the kids this year's parade was cute overload.

Moss Beach Park bathroom one big step closer

Fantastic news Scott - on behalf of the kids, and their parents, thanks for your creativity in finding a solution. As Barry mentioned, this is our park of choice on the mid-coast and bathrooms will be a huge improvement.

Letter: Why did MWSD appeal lawsuit?

May 15, 2009
You are right Steve - the actual comment was "sacred field of weeds" **Appropriations Committee passes AB1991** "There’s nothing special about this **sacred field of weeds**" Local Government Committee passes AB1991—next stop: Appropriations Committee "So when all is said and done, **this sacred piece of wetland**s probably cost the community $25-30 million" And my personal favorite: **Half Moon Bay negotiating its surrender in Sacramento** "Can I please borrow your glasses cause I’m not seeing…

Yes Sabrina - you can be assured of Steve's sincerity. Such is his admiration of our beautiful wildflowers that he's re-named them - sacred weeds I believe.

Montara photographer opens HMB gallery show, Sunday

March 24, 2009
I've not only attended gallery shows of Mr. Buelteman's work, but also had the pleasure of working with him. This is a not-to-miss show of extraordinary work by a man who supports this community in countless ways. I highly recommend taking the time to attend and meet Robert. You will not be disappointed.

I'd also like to say that Ink Spell is another amazing community resource that we all need to get out and support, if we don't want to see it go the way of Moon News. Cindi and her crew have been there anytime we've needed help with field trips, or books for our school classes. They welcome our Cunha Kids after school, not just as a place to buy books, but to hang out with friend in a safe welcoming environment. Thanks to Cindi and her amazing staff, and you have my promise to stop in more often!…

We'll miss Moon News. They were a true community bookstore. I especially enjoyed the nights they stayed open late during Cunha Dances, so I had a place to hang out while waiting for the kids. The staff was knowledgeable and always had great recommendations for new reads. If they didn't have it, they ordered it. Next to Keplers in Palo Alto, Moon News was my favorite, and to have it here locally was a real privilege.

Coffee with the Cunha Intermediate School Principal, Friday

March 13, 2009
As Barry said - we had some fantastic teachers at Cunha who made all the difference. My son and daughter still go back to say hello and catch up from time to time. Mrs. Weber, their counselor was also a huge support, and always helpful if we did have issues. The big difference is made with parent involvement. School Loop is a great tool to keep generally informed, but nothing beats personal involvement in the school and in your kids life. Volunteer for events, go to the plays, and the science fair,…

Jack - these are fantastic shots of the race. I especially like the black and white crop in your Flickr gallery. Well done as always. Cheri

Also makes me wonder what Kunstler would say about the proposed "SCENIC" safe bypass in Half Moon Bay that requires paving over nature to create something "SCENIC".

Video: Places that are not worth caring about

Easily the best video I've seen in some time. One of the reasons I love visiting my parents in rural Barnesville Georgia is that the town is a real town, with a town square, and architecturally unique buildings. Unfortunately as the cross traffic heading to Atlanta get's closer, it is become more accommodating to cars than people. Savannah is another favorite for all of the wonderful outdoor spaces. Now if they could only do something about the heat and humidity!

Letter: Eco-terrorism on the Coast—Part 2

January 12, 2009
My take is that this is exactly the problem Steve. There are plenty of folks out there complaining, but when asked to step up their answer is frequently along the lines of yours, "Its not my place to be the peacemaker." I'm not asking anyone to take on the role of peacekeeper of the coast single-handidly. But far too many are willing to toss out vitriol and then in the same breath express disappointment in the very divide they help maintain. The result is that a large number of people, who don't…

Letter: Eco-terrorism on the Coast—Part 2

January 12, 2009
**What has been very disappointing to me as a long time resident is how continually divided we are as a community and how so many projects are fought tooth and nail for many many years.** Steve - I'm curious how someone so disappointed in the divide is helping the matter by calling his neighbors "terrorists"? What exactly are you doing to make that divide smaller?

Opinion: CUSD board loads, aims at foot, prepares to pull trigger

June 21, 2008
Joel -- CUSD Hater? Nothing could be further from the truth. I have three kids, one in each school (High School, Cunha and Farallone View) I have enormous respect for the teachers and administration, and have found them to be excellent educators and diligent workers. If it were up to me our teachers would get ten times their current salaries, because believe me, they deserve it. I've also volunteered in each school and supported them financially. I've taken pictures, contributed to the yearbooks,…

Oh Martha - you're speaking my language now. How about that other C - Cabernet! I was also happy to see a few single malt scotches, and if you want to entertain the 10 and younger set - they have machines that let you grind your own Almond Butter or Peanut Butter, which you can then eat on Dagoba chocolate. If you haven't tried it - you must. My favorite is the Xocolati which is 74% dark chocolate with Chilies and cocoa nibs. They also make a nice lime/ginger and best of all, they are on sale this…

Opinion: CUSD board loads, aims at foot, prepares to pull trigger

June 05, 2008
Is CUSD running out of school related topics to spend their time on? Could they spend some time looking at why we have school busses that go up and down the coast EMPTY after dropping off students that are being bused from Moonridge to Farallone View? If that empty bus passes me one more time while I'm hauling my kids and others -- because there are no buses from Montara to the middle and high schools -- I'm going to scream. I find it amazing that Sam Trans was willing and responsive to the community…

HMB Safeway isn’t as expensive as you think, but it’s no bargain

June 05, 2008
One clarification about my comments on Safeway in HMB. My issues are more experiential than about the employee's themselves, most of whom I see working hard and all who have been pleasant. When I do get a bagger, it is usually Mirabel - who is fast, efficient and very nice. When there are no baggers, the checkers are always apologetic and pitch in to help, but at the end of the day, the problem is staffing for the rush hours. Many of us are bound to the 2:30 - 3:30 timeframe when we're picking up…

HMB Safeway isn’t as expensive as you think, but it’s no bargain

June 03, 2008
As one of the shoppers in this exercise I have a few additional observations. New Leaf was a real treat and worth the drive to Santa Cruz on all levels. Shopping there left me truly excited about their new store in Half Moon Bay. All the products I purchased were organic or green. The employees raved about the work environment, and I felt genuinely good about shopping there. We LOVE the farmer's market. If you haven't gone, go. If you've gone to HMB try Pacifica on Wednesdays - lot's of different…
