Half Moon Bay International Marathon, Sept 25

Letter

By on Mon, June 13, 2011

We are in the process of planning for the inaugural Half Moon Bay International Marathon, to be held on September 25, 2011. We are building this event from the ground up to be a first-class event, which we believe will grow into one of the premiere destination races in the world. With 26.2 miles of coastal running beauty and perfect weather conditions in September, coupled with our proximity to San Francisco, the wine country and more, we expect we are creating another event like the Big Sur Marathon, which is one of the top draws each year. You can see the full website at http://halfmoonbayim.org.

We are also very focused on the Green aspects of the event here at the outset. We have enlisted (and paid) the organizations Athletes for a Fit Planet, and the Council for Responsible Sport to work with us to earn their certification, and are taking all aspects of this into account. Our Green page is at http://halfmoonbayim.org/index.php/green.

We are also a 501(c)(3) company, created solely for the purpose of sponsoring a recurring, beneficial event for our Coastside environment.

We are asking local businesses to partner with us and have sponsorship available at many levels.  Although this first event is limited to 500 total runners it will certainly grow and there will be benefits to sponsoring from the inaugural event .

There will be a mapping party in Half Moon Bay, Saturday, June 11. The group is meeting at La Di Da from about 10am to 2pm. Bring your own GPS or borrow one at the party.  They’ll help you figure out what you can add to the map of Half Moon Bay

I’ve been to one of these in Oakland, and it’s a pretty interesting process.  The goal is to update the information in the Open Street Map, an open-source map of the world

OSM’s incredibly ambitious goal is to build a map database that rivals proprietary maps in its scope. They’re well on their way in many countries, and their data for the US is already very good. They already have pretty detailed information for the Coastside. I’ve updated the map of Montara and some hiking trails myself.

A bike stolen in Princeton, warrant arrest, DUI, drugs, and this:

Deputies responded to a report of a stolen cat. The reporting party told them that her neighbors had a litter of kittens that they did not care for. One cat showed up on her porch and was injured. She took the cat to PHS and had the injuries treated. When the neighbor did not claim their cat from PHS she adopted it. The neighbors then asked for it back. She did not return the cat to them as she had adopted it. When the family moved away she accused them of stealing the cat. It was later found under a bed at a neighbor’s house.

Exciting weather in store?

Letter

By on Fri, June 3, 2011

“…Plenty of moisture has been entrained into this system and the way the system will interact with the coast in terms of orographic enhancements… this looks like a potentially record-breaking event for our area for early June.

“Latest AMSU [Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit, microwave sounder designed primarily to obtain temperature profiles in the upper atmosphere] precipitable water estimates give well over an inch of rain wrapped up in this system. Models continue previous trends of bringing light rain to the North Bay later today and spreading south through the greater SF Bay by evening… then reaching the Monterey Bay Area before midnight. Heaviest rain is expected overnight tonight into Saturday morning. But as the upper low is forecast to remain wobbling off the coast through Sunday… shower chances will persist through the weekend. Models indicate a break in the rainfall after noon tomorrow… with renewed shower chances overnight into Sunday.

“Storm total QPF [Quantitative Precipitation Forecast] expected with this system gives 2–5 inches across the wettest areas including North Bay hills… Santa Cruz Mountains and the Santa Lucias. Inland lower areas could get upwards of 1–2 inches total. …”

Thus the NWS.

Members of the public should attend, so this is less of a surprise, if for no other reason.

It’s not clear that many people have noticed, but the city of Half Moon Bay has commissioned post-graduate students from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to prepare a Downtown Plan and Design Guidelines.

Tonight, they are presenting the final design plan with guidelines for the future development of Downtown Half Moon Bay. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting at 7:00 PM at the Ted Adcock Senior/Community Center, 535 Kelly Avenue.
