In the mood for some zany French Dadaism this Friday?

Letter

By on Wed, July 21, 2010

The Coastside Film Society proudly presents Zazie dans le Métro.

"Are you in an agreeable mood to have your leg pulled right out of its socket by a practical joker with a movie camera? Then you may just be ready for "Zazie," an elaborate French exercise in cinematic Dadaism." Bosley Crowther. New York Times (1960) 92 mins.  French with English Subtitles

Zazie is a frenetic comedy & social satire by the great French director, Louis Malle. The film stars Catherine Demongeot as a sassy 11-year-old dumped for the weekend with her strange uncle Gabriele.  She takes off on a madcap adventure though the Paris her uncle loves.

Some reviewers see the film as little more than a zany comedy. Others see it as a indictment of the excesses of the 1960’s as viewed though the uncritical eyes of its young star.  At the time, some even found the film shocking because of Zazie’s potty mouth, obvious delight in causing the maximum amount of mayhem, and the fact that she was unloaded on an uncle who works as a female impersonator.

"The film is constantly one step ahead of the audience, always just a little bit smarter than we are. We expect a story about a child to be more fantastic and dare I say zany than a story about adults, and Zazie in the Metro exploits that expectation, leading us to first laugh at the film and only realize the implications of what we’re laughing at moments later."  Tim Brayton, Antagony & Ecstasy

The two suspects in the shooting of a Half Moon Bay man Sunday were arrested Monday night. Brandon Michael Sargentini, 29, of San Jose, and Samantha Nicole Warner, 19,  of San Leandro, were arrested in San Leandro after their car was spotted in the parking lot of a Hayward motel.

The suspects were turned over to the Half Moon Bay police, and admitted their involvement in the shooting. A handgun was recovered from the hotel room.

Following a countywide alert, a San Mateo police officer recognized the suspects as having been in a car he had stopped just two hours before the shooting. A witness to the shooting confirmed the identity of the suspect from a photograph of the car’s male passenger.

Letter

By on Tue, July 20, 2010

Unrinetown, The Musical promises an evening of great entertainment!
Dear Coastal Rep Patron:
I have seen, appeared in or directed every play but two that Coastal Rep has produced over the past 18 years. In my humble opinion, URINETOWN, The Musical is this companies finest moment. Incredible singing, acting, choreography, set, lights, sound and costume design combined with Martin Rojas-Dietrich’s beautiful vision has equaled a show I guarantee you will adore. Do not miss this landmark production.
See you at the theatre,
Michael Lederman
Artistic Director
BUY TICKETS ONLINE AT: www.coastalrep.com or call 650.569.3266.
Inspired by the outrageous political theatre of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, URINETOWN, The Musical is a gloriously silly, irreverently truthful satire from which no target is safe, especially the American musical theatre. This is a show that catapults musical comedy into the new millennium with its rule-shattering tear through the traditions and conventions of musicals, leaving audiences with a fun-filled evening of theatre.
Don’t miss our opening night Gala this Friday July 23, with delicious treats, champagne toasts and celebration with the cast and crew following the show.  URINTETOWN, The Musical runs through August 21.
With great appreciation for your patronage - Coastal Rep

Does the Coastside need another store (gas station) selling liquor?

Letter

By on Mon, July 19, 2010

The Midcoast Community Council has been asked by County Counsels office to comment on an application to sell liquor by a local gas station that already sells beer and wine   We are seeking community input..

A special certificate, called “A Certificate of Public Convenience or Necessity” is required because the number of liquor licenses in the area exceeds the number allowed by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC).

I am welcoming community comments on the subject.  Please email to [email protected].  The item will be on the agenda at the July 28th meeting
