HMB Police advise: "Street closure at 300 & 400 blocks of Poplar in Half Moon Bay due to downed power lines. No estimated time of restoration."

I'm told the power is out in Artleta Park in HMB.
Meanwhile, Darin Boville, who shares a fence with us, has had power since 1pm.

We've gotten two reports that the back of Montara has power for a change.
A local PG&E guy who has been working on the problem says the power should be back on at Audubon/Acacia, where we live, in an hour or so.

The National Weather Service forecasts southerly winds of 20 to 35 mph, with gusts to 50 mph possible through tonight. The strong and gusty winds will gradually diminish late tonight.

A tree is down at Highway 1 in Montara, at Seventh Street. The road is blocked as Caltrans and PG&E crews work on the problem.
Traffic is being routed through Montara on Main Street, so the Highway is still open.

As of noon today, the MWSD weather station recorded 2.66 inches of rainfall in Montara.
Meanwhile the National Weather Service allowed its flash flood warning to expire at 12:15 this afternoon, because the intensity of rain has been declining and is forecast to continue declining.
However a flash flood warning has been issued for the Lockheed Burn area of Santa Cruz County.

Kevin, I'm not sure what point you're making.
My point is that scientific evidence, based on real-world data, is a better source of public policy that feelings. That's true in global warming and it's true in public health.
This policy is based on nothing more than fear and irrational prejudice disguised as common sense.
Discussion of global warming is off-topic in this thread, but you're welcome to post a letter on the topic if you really want to go there.

The following was contributed by Suzanne Black in a letter was posted before I released this one. Below is the memo from the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Finance outlining the budget solution: Date: September 24, 2009 To: Paul Feist, Chief Deputy Cabinet Secretary From: Ruth Coleman, Director, Department of Parks and Recreation Ana Matosantos, Chief Deputy Director, Department of Finance Subject: Solution to Avoid Park Closures After several weeks of analyzing Parks’…

I'm certain any candidate is going to condemn vandalizing other candidates' signs, so what exactly would be the point of calling for some sort of public pledge? It's a distraction from the issues, rather than an encouragement to discuss them.
September 25, 2009
This kind of vandalism is easy to do and hard to stop, but the long-term result is that everyone loses.
George and I don't agree on much of anything, but I'm sad and frustrated to see this going on.

I'm in partial agreement with Kevin. The MCC's "effectiveness" can't be measured by how often the supervisors does what they recommend.
A better measure of effectiveness would be how much the MCC gets done.
It's not clear that effectiveness is the only (or best) measure of performance. As an advisory body, I would think that representativeness would be a better criterion.

Carl's right that the MCC should be have responsibility for parks on the Midcoast. I certainly agree that if MCC had more authority, it would behave more responsibly, but that's not the hand we've been (unfairly) dealt.
The county's contempt is a fair explanation of the council's dysfunction, but it's not an excuse.

David: Could you contact me by email? I have a question for you and I don't have a current email address.
September 07, 2009
To be fair, the question at the end is worth asking, which is why I moved it to the main column. The Board of Supervisors has done everything it could to sabotage the MCC: Limiting who can be on the council, keeping it from representing the Midcoast to other government bodies, gutting its work on the LCP. But we still need to play the hand we've been dealt. The MCC has no meaningful authority, but it is plagued with more personal conflict, slower action, and blindingly dull meetings than any other…

I think this is clearly part of the reasoning behind this: provoke a crisis and force the parks to look for "public-private partnerships" to cover their costs. The Presidio is a template for this.
I also wonder if it's a continuing tantrum from the governor over the state parks board's unwillingness to support building a highway through a park:

Mr. Mackey has a history of exercising poor judgement in public communications.
August 30, 2009
While I don't agree with him or some of his premises, I thought Mackey's column was honest and rational.
It was a refreshing change of pace from the fear mongering we're hearing from opponents of the public option or reform in general.

It does look like a while flag, and there's something vaguely ominous about it.
Generally, you can't just scale up graphics and text. You need to change their weights when you use the in different sizes and applications.

Thanks for the note. I've fixed it.
