Beachwood—Create a sustainable destination

August 27, 2009
The SJ item seems like a good idea from their perspective as a tech center with an uncertain economic and environmental future. Part of my problem with the discussion is you haven't defined what "sustainability" means in the context of Half Moon Bay. So, rather than a general definition, it should consider the nature of the place, its population, its economic base, and its goals for the future. I'm having a hard time seeing how Beachwood fits into that vision, even if you ignore for the moment the…

Beachwood—Create a sustainable destination

August 27, 2009
A greenfield site with wetlands and endangered species habitat as well as a significant view corridor might not be the best place to build a sustainability lab. The city council is determined to develop the site because it's worth millions of dollars -- although last year they told us it was worthless. There will almost certainly be houses built at Beachwood. The only question is how many and how much land will they occupy. If the site were to be developed, is there a way to do it in a way that could…

Case against Coastal Commission dismissed

August 26, 2009
I've withdrawn a comment released by mistake. It was too personally insulting to one of the participants in the conversation. UPDATE: The comment has been edited at the poster's request and re-released.

Case against Coastal Commission dismissed

August 25, 2009
Richard, in what sense is the judiciary "in collusion" with the Coastal Commission? It seems to me that they're upholding the law, and that these state laws are consistent with the Supreme Court's interpretation of the fifth amendment. Generally I've found that when people say they don't like the Coastal Commission, what they're really saying is that they don't like the law. And when they get in trouble with the CCC, it's because they've broken the law.

Video: Full video of Jackie Speier’s health care town hall

August 25, 2009
Jackie Speier is only doing a handful of these meetings during the recess, and it's reasonable that any resident of her district would be welcome to the event. I saw plenty of Coastsiders there, and judging from the cheering when Sue Digre was introduced, there was a sizable crowd from Pacifica. It was also clear that the unions had brought a big crowd to the event, but not clear whether they were district residents or not. I would have liked to hear more hard questions about implementation details,…

Photos: Red tide at Surfers Beach

It's not clear whether swimming in a red tide is harmful. From the CDC: The human health effects associated with eating brevetoxin-tainted shellfish are well documented. However, scientists know little about how other types of environmental exposures to brevetoxin—such as breathing the air near red tides or swimming in red tides—may affect humans. Anecdotal evidence suggests that people who swim among brevetoxins or inhale brevetoxins dispersed in the air may experience irritation of the eyes,…

Supervisor Gordon’s office hours, Friday

August 24, 2009
Jim, thanks for asking. I checked with Rich's office and they say he'll be there till noon. I've updated the story. I encourage everyone to consider doing this at least once. There's usually not much of a wait and it's a good opportunity to meet Rich Gordon one-on-one.

Bob, thanks for the correction. I've fixed the text. I'm not sure many more folks showed up after Congresswoman Speier started speaking, but I could be mistaken. It did seem that a large crowd of anti-reformers showed up around 11. Most of them were standing in the back.

August 22, 2009
Description of red tide from wikipedia: Red tide is a common name for a phenomenon more correctly known as an algal bloom, an event in which estuarine, marine, or fresh water algae accumulate rapidly in the water column. These algae, more specifically phytoplankton, are single-celled protists, plant-like organisms that can form dense, visible patches near the water's surface. Certain species of phytoplankton, such as Dinoflagelate, contain photosynthetic pigments that vary in colour from green to…

I've added a couple of photos from another photographer with a closer view, but not quite so red.

No election for MCC, MWSD; Elections for CFPD, CCWD, GSD

August 13, 2009
I can see no disadvantage to incumbency in that race. It's probably an oversight. But it sounds like you have a theory, Joel.

Great idea. I'm planning to attend this as well.

OMG what a terrible headline.

HMB inventories its real estate

August 09, 2009
My impression is that there's not much value there. At least one property is a toxic dump site that was given to the cit. At one point they were talking about returning it. Others are of little value because they're not buildable. But I don't know the details of all the properties.

HMB inventories its real estate

August 09, 2009
I'm not sure what you find troubling. If I remember correctly, HMB is entirely within the coastal zone. But, the city has had plenty of development since the Coastal Act, so it's not as if that has been much of an impediment to development.

Expect El Niño this winter, and probably plenty of rain

August 09, 2009
Good point. That's certainly true if you don't know whether this will be a moderate or severe year. And the truth is that you don't have enough data to draw strong conclusions about the correlation between El Niño and rainfall.

Sierra Club questions HMB over Beachwood

August 07, 2009
I'm confused. On the one hand, Steve says that lawsuits have been a disaster for the community, on the other he says:The City should prep the land for sale and decide whether or not to involve the adjoining parcel they have an option on. Once its cleared, everybody will see clearly, just like in N Wavecrest, what all the fuss was about and then figure out how many homes they can put there ... suggesting the same disastrous course of action that led to heartache and millions of dollars lost at Wavecrest.…

Sierra Club questions HMB over Beachwood

August 07, 2009
Steve says:The bottom line is that the City drained water onto the property and created the wetlands. That's not what Judge Walker's decision says. I recommend you download the decision from Coastsider and read it if you're going to post about what it says. As to this:And just as we are trying to close the book on this long running expensive nightmare, here come more threats of new lawsuits. Many people want our money to go for positive things, not lining the pockets of lawyers. You and Mark Massara…

Sierra Club questions HMB over Beachwood

August 06, 2009
Steve writes: Its truly an outrage to think a small group of people held the community hostage depriving us of a new school and a Boys & Girls Club for nothing. By "small group of people", you must mean the US Army Corps of Engineers, which stopped the building of Wavecrest. And in case you haven't noticed, we have our new school. It's not as nice as it could be, because our school board wasted ten years and millions of dollars not building anything. Please try to stay on topic. I'd prefer not to…
