New look Montara Beach website.

Kevin, this is a great looking site, and the photos are terrific. Did you do the design on this? What software are you using?

Coastside beaches to be closed in budget deal

July 22, 2009
Kevin, this is a Republican budget. There is nothing in this budget that the Democrats would have done if they had been able to pass a budget with a majority vote. The correct way to do this would be to put the Democrats in the hot seat and let 'em pass what they wanted and have the Gov sign it and let the voters decide if they liked the result. The Republicans are ruling from the minority because of the 2/3 requirement and the fact that they hold the Governorship. The current 2/3 requirement is…

Save Pacifica’s hillsides, don’t widen Highway 1

July 22, 2009
The transportation question is an interesting one. A member of our school board, which cancelled busing and refuses to address the issue, keeps pushing for a bypass on Hwy 1 in HMB. School traffic is a huge contributor to morning traffic on that route and others.

Coastside beaches to be closed in budget deal

Apologies for posting this without checking the date and thanks to everyone for catching the error. I'm going to leave this up, because it's bad form to remove already-posted stories and because the discussion is worthwhile. I'll correct the story.

Coastside beaches to be closed in budget deal

July 21, 2009
I'm not sure what to say. We all know that vital services are being cut for real people by this budget. And oil drilling is set to begin off the coast of Santa Barbara. It seems selfish to complain about closing state parks under the circumstances. I don't think anybody knows at this stage what it means to close a state beach. Then there are all the other parks where closure means just that: you won't have any meaningful access at all. This calls into question just how protected state land is. This…

25-year-old banker announces city council candidacy

July 21, 2009
I considered using the headline "25-year-old banker who talks like 65-year-old banker running for city council".

Picking wildflowers on the Jean Lauer Trail at Pillar Point Bluff

July 20, 2009
I was on the bluff this weekend and it was magnificent. I'm not sure what the legal status of the wildflowers on the bluff is. It's private property owned by the Peninsula Open Space Trust, so it's not illegal like it would be in a state park. But it's certainly ill-mannered. The best course is probably just to speak to them politely. I know these days, that can be considered aggressive behavior by some. But it's not exactly a rough crowd out there on the bluff picking wildflowers.

Be Swindlers or Create Integrity: Build the Beachwood Park

July 16, 2009
The plan to build a park on Beachwood was a quid pro quo for money from the state. Without the promise of state money for a park, the city is under no obligation, ethical or otherwise, to build a park at that site.

MCTV replies to the Grand Jury

July 13, 2009
Vince, thanks for drawing attention to this: The one area where at least a small group of individuals has shown interest in producing local programming is in the area of public meeting videos. However, such proposals appear designed to compete for the funding that MCTV receives for taping public meetings. If third parties took over taping public meetings, MCTV would lose a significant portion of its revenue and the public would not receive any additional programming. This is the first time that MCTV…

Of Teddy Bears, Alligators, and the Passing of a Great Spirit

July 13, 2009
Hal - I'm so glad you took the time to write this lovely remembrance of Rod. He was one of many characters on the coastside that make this such a special place. When I worked at Coastside Hope, I often walked over to Cafe Classique for lunch, and more often than not, Rod was there, perched on a window stool, holding court over the lunch crowd. The first time we spoke, I was sitting next to Rod having lunch with Barry. Rod leaned over and said, "I always like seeing a couple in love, let me read you…

Grand Jury blames lack of oversight for MCTV’s poor quality programming

July 12, 2009
Vince, my point is that if MCTV were responsive to the community, more people would watch it. On emergency systems, my point is the same. If MCTV were properly managed, it would be a significant communication asset in an emergency. But I agree that MCTV as currently constituted is not up to either drawing an audience or serving the community when it really matters.

Grand Jury blames lack of oversight for MCTV’s poor quality programming

July 12, 2009
Vince, I agree that PEG TV is an eighties medium and at some point it won't matter. However, I there are several reason why this matters for the next five years at least: * Channel 6 reaches about half the homes on the Coastside in a way that is more accessible and more direct than any other medium. People see Channel 6 on the program guide and when they are channel surfing. * Channel 6 is still a vital information service in the event of an emergency. * MCTV prevented the use of newsworthy clips…

Grand Jury blames lack of oversight for MCTV’s poor quality programming

July 12, 2009
Rich Gordon says he told MCTV he did not want them to change from a member-owned organization to a self-appointed board. The supervisors have no direct authority over MCTV, but they can determine who gets to operate Channel 6, which is not owned by MCTV. MCTV is a private organization with its own board of directors. It's organized as a 501c3 nonprofit. A self-appointing board is not necessarily a bad thing, and most Coastside non-profits are organized that way. MCTV's governance wouldn't be an issue…

Sneak preview: Tommy, Saturday

July 12, 2009
Cheri and I attended the sneak preview last night and it looks like this is going to be a spectacular production. These sneak previews are conducted as fund-raisers for the Coastal Rep and it was a great event.

Grand Jury blames lack of oversight for MCTV’s poor quality programming

The Daily Journal sort-of covered the Grand Jury report, although it reads like they did a quick cut & paste just before the deadline: http://smdailyjournal.com/article_preview.php?id=113138

I've seen this book in person and it's a beautiful reprint of wonderful book. Highly recommended.

Grand Jury blames lack of oversight for MCTV’s poor quality programming

July 11, 2009
I'd prefer a locally-run organization to merging with Pacifica TV. Fun Fact: One member of MCTV's board lives in Pacifica, where she is unable to receive MCTV.

Grand Jury blames lack of oversight for MCTV’s poor quality programming

July 11, 2009
Pacifica's PEG (Public, Educational, and Government) station looks like a great model: They have locally produced programming, their website solicits programming and memberships from the community, they keep regular office hours (m-f 1-6), they train community members to create programming, and I am told the televise their own board meetings. By contrast, MCTV seems particularly joyless. If they had PEG TV in North Korea, it would look a lot like MCTV.

Public warning about stranded sea lions

July 10, 2009
Last Sunday, during the Montara Beach cleanup, we spotted on wounded and three dead sea lions on the beach. We called the Marine Mammal Center and they were there to help the wounded animal in less than 30 minutes.
