Method to improve mobile phone reception?

July 28, 2007
I've heard good things about T-Mobile's hybrid wifi/cellular phone service. This would solve the no signal at home problem for many of us. However there are two drawbacks: 1. It's T-Mobile 2. There are only two handsets that work with this service. Find out more at this lame, Flash-driven site: http://www.theonlyphoneyouneed.com/

This is a very cool idea, and might work for a lot of us. My reception is very weak on my second floor, so I'm not certain how much it would help me, but it sounds worth trying.

Sorry about the anonymous emails sent via Coastsider to four users, including Mary -- and me. I don't know who this person is. The email wasn't malicious, but I don't like propagating anonymous email and the potential for genuine abuse is unacceptable. I've changed the system so that only trusted members -- the 150+ users who use their real names and can post without moderation -- are able to send email via the site.

Why can’t the Review be objective about the Pilarcitos Creek park site?

July 11, 2007
Suzan, I agree that these are good questions, and the city and the Review should be asking them. But, sadly, they are not. Debra stated flatly that the city cannot afford the park, but made no case, not even providing a proper estimate of the cost. Open space is no substitute for a park. And cities need both neighborhood parks & playgrounds, as well as larger community spaces. Take a look at Central Park in San Mateo. It's a magnificent resource for the community. It may take years for Half Moon…

Comments and community on Coastsider

TalkAbout certainly do feel like it could use some adult supervision. There have been a couple of times I considered posting there (including places where I'm being flat-out lied about) but chose not to because it's futile to try and carry on a conversation there.

Thanks for asking. I've added a link in th story to the full results at ElectionVine.

The Review’s publisher is confused about park financing, democracy

June 22, 2007
Charlie, I've just posted my response to the issues raised in Debra's column on Coastsider's home page. I agree that it's time for the city to do a fair and rational assessment of its park options, including the costs and environmental issues. So far, this has not been done. I have no idea why.

Actually, on Coastsider, you really do have a good idea who you're talking to. For instance, I've met both Vince and Mary and nearly everyone else in this thread, and I'm confident that the two I have not met are using their real identities.

Terry, I agree that we could have parks if we could come together as a community. I'm surprised you'd single me out here. After all, I'm saying that this is a project that can be done and one which I will support. It seems to me that the "incessant yammering" is coming from somewhere else. We've been saying clearly and directly that the city can build a park if it decides it wants a park. Opponents of a park on Pilarcitos Creek have been crying over spilled milk -- the price the city paid, the communication…

When did the minimum become sufficient?

Brian, you still haven't documented your false accusation of "continual abuse of the City, its Council Members and Staff". So far, you've only said that I'm abusing the city council by ignoring them. I doubt they're so needy that my lack of attention is seen as abusive. Please document your accusation or apologize.

When did the minimum become sufficient?

June 15, 2007
Brian, you seem to be saying that because I haven't praised the current city council majority, I am being abusive. And that by withholding my praise, I'm abusing "as an extension, staff (they do the dirty work) and many residents." Is that your position? Seriously?

When did the minimum become sufficient?

June 15, 2007
Brian, you still have not answered my direct request that you back up your accusation of "continual abuse of the City, its Council Members and Staff". Instead, you're trying to change the subject. If you'd prefer not to support your baseless claim, you might want to apologize. Not coincidentally, your behavior on Coastsider has been consistently abusive toward other users.

Why I don’t do polls on Coastsider

June 14, 2007
The general Coastsider registered membership is pretty random, includes a substantial population of would-be spammers, and many users have more than one account because they forgot their old id or password. However, if I limited a poll to registered members only, I would be reasonably confident that it expressed the preferences of Coastsider readers. The accounts authorized to post in Town Hall are pretty well vetted to represent real, unique individuals. You have to request Town Hall posting access…

Cunha was also my first real introduction to downtown Half Moon Bay. It's one reason that I was so adamant that the school remain where it is. Moving it to Wavecrest would have disconnected many of us from the heart of the community. [I don't want to turn this into a debate on the middle school site, but I did want to provide a little insight into how it connects Midcoasters to Half Moon Bay.]

Timeline: HMB’s Pilarcitos Creek park site

June 12, 2007
What was striking to me when I put the timeline together was that -- except for the renegotiation -- there has been zero activity on this front since the last election 18 months ago. I don't understand why the city hasn't tried to get either an itemized estimate or a plan and estimate for a staged development of the park.

When did the minimum become sufficient?

June 11, 2007
Brian, please point to my abuse of the city, its council members or staff. It has never happened. Not once, let alone continually. It's a matter of debate whether the bypass, the Wavecrest middle school, the great big water pipe, and a less ambitious Local Coastal Program are solutions or problems. That's why we're here. I'll put my record for promoting discussion up against anyone on the Coastside. And please re-read this article. I offfered a simple solution to the problem I've identified. Do you…

Clouding the record is a serious issue. Take a look at our video of the special meeting. There's a clear disagreement between Naomi Patridge and city attorney Adam Lindgren over whether he told her in closed session that the city could not release the redacted material. When you don't have a transcript of a meeting, what actually happened is open to anyone's interpretation. You also seem to resent folks from the Midcoast poking into the city's business. We're not all one city, but we are all one…

Video: HMB City Council releases full due diligence report, doesn’t kill park yet

June 07, 2007
Having read the due diligence report a couple of times while highlighting the redactions, I have to tell you that I don't know what all the fuss is about. I can understand why folks like Larry Kay or George Muteff would profess to be frightened about what must be in the document. After all, they haven't seen it. But I'm surprised that Bonnie McClung and Marina Fraser would speak about this report as if they knew some dark secret about the park and then release what looks like a pretty routine list…

Exclusive video:  HMB City Council prepares to kill Pilarcitos Creek park site

June 05, 2007
Brian, this has nothing to do with how you feel about any previous member of HMB city council. The question is whether by calling two meeing with absolute minimum public notice, and apparently preparing to make a decision with zero financial analysis, the current city council is putting the lie to their talk of open government, as well as breaching their fiduciary duty to the city. What we're witnessing here is an avoidable debacle in the making, and at the end of the day the only conclusion we can…

June 04, 2007
Brian, the previous city council could have done more sooner on the park financing, but it's important to remember that the city was in the middle of the park planning process and didn't have an estimate of the cost before the election. The current council has had nearly a year to get a real estimate out of their contractor, but haven't bothered. They have also shut the citizens out of the process of deciding what to do about their parks.
