They've cleared an inland area and will be moving the road into that area for phase I.
While we're driving inland, they'll clear the area on the ocean side, and move us out toward the water during the heavy construction phase.
The current target date for phase I is now Wednesday.

That's an interesting point: that the staffing crisis is the result of the temporary restraining order that the union secured against the districts.

Checks and balances are essential when dealing with any kind of development. These things don't exist in isololation, they're part of whatever community they're plopped into, and will endure long after we're all dust. It's the reason we have things like planning commissions and coastal development permits. The kinds of checks and balances that the Coastside right decry as violations of their property rights every time they get in front of a public forum. I haven't been to the site in a while, so…

Kevin, that's a significant point.

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to unify Coastsider's Calendar and Events stories. Sometimes they're not in sync.
Google calendar is great. At one point I tried to get more Coastside organizations to use it for their public calendars, but no one took me up on it.

My personal favorite was this great shot of a CRLF at Wavecrest. This was the first real news story that Coastsider carried, almost three years ago:

Pacifica and the Coastside are more intertwined than many of us might think.
We both deal with Coastal Commission issues in development, Montara is closer to Linda Mar than it is to Half Moon Bay, and the tunnel is going to bring us both a lot closer.
And, Pacifica has been a lab for a lot of bad development practices that we can take lessons from here on the Coastside.

The accusation that global warming believers are behaving like religious zealots is just weird -- the science supports the global warming scenario and the religious right is in bed with the deniers.
For another perspective on the Channel 4 documentary Mary cites, see the following:

Good question. This is a judgement call as far as I'm concerned. On the one hand, when I run the police reports, I almost always remove the names of suspects. This is consistent with the Daily Journal's policy. If I remember correctly, it's also what the Review does. However, I don't fault the Review in this case. This incident has some bearing on the officer's assignment. And, as I understand it, the case is far from over, as it's still a personnel matter for the HMBPD. I can understand feeling…

It's too bad, because downtown Half Moon Bay is the heart of the Coastside Community from HMB to Montara. Adcock, Cunha, Seacrest, senior services, and the library are all there. The high school is nearby. It's the center of the community for Halloween, Independence day, rock the block, the wine walk, and other events. I don't know about everyone else, Main Street is at the core of my connection to the rest of the community. But shopping for locals has moved to Strawflower Village and (soon) Harbor…

In today's Review, City Council member Marina Fraser says, "We can't stop it, and people wouldn't want us to, because then it would be like communist Russia." Except, of course, that in the Soviet Union, Mr. Shami would have been shot and his property confiscated. And Mr. Bechar would have been sent to Siberia for a decade or so for re-education out of his Petite-Bourgeois mindset. Except for those minor details, interfering in Mr. Bechar's impending eviction would be exactly like they used to do…

Minimum lot sizes and lot merging are not the only culprits.
Even when a lot is kept small, it's often built out beyond the max, with a townhouse that would be more appropriate in, say, San Francisco. Check out the photos in the following story:

Small houses on small lots have numerous benefits to the community: affordable housing, more population diversity, more-human scale neighborhoods, improved views.

Although they're right next to one another, the gas station and the portion of the shopping center to be occupied by Peet's and New Leaf have different owners.
Popeye's isn't any more downmarket than KFC, but it does appear that generally the fried chicken chains tend be clustered in lower-income areas. I confess I like Popeye's chicken a lot, although I'd prefer not to see another drive-thru at that intersection, along with another big, internally illuminated plastic sign.

Brian, you're still trying to redirect the conversation. I'm still convinced that an objective analysis would show that the downtown park is a winner, but six months after the city's consultant produced an unsupported "estimate" of the cost of developing the park, there is still no explanation or itemization. The city has done nothing to move the process forward, only to delay the day of reckoning. Nor has the city provided any guidance on how they hope to resolve the mess at Terrace. The so-called…

Brian, that sounds like "Yeah, but your favorite city council was just as lousy as my favorite city council". John has raised a significant question, but you've ignored it.

I came close to not releasing Joel's comment because he once again makes the unsupportable charge that people are concerned about this because "someone wants to make progress that benefits children." I, for one, supported Cunha as long as I've been aware it was even a question. I did so for reasons that have everything to do with good planning and a desire for a great middle school -- and nothing to do with anything else. I desperately want this project built. And I simply don't see how HMB can simply…

I went out to the parking lot at Montara State Beach tonight and ran into Darin there. He was kind enough to help me and a couple of other folks find the comet.
Very Cool! This is definitely worth checking out.

The Monday Photo is Darin's deal, but we always consider Coastside photos for publication and run most of the ones we get.

How much of MROSD's and POST's land was in agricultural production when the acquired it? Has POST or MROSD taken any agricultural land out of production? I know less about how MROSD operates, but I get the impression that POST has acquired a lot of its land when it was on the verge of being taken out of agricultural production. If that's true, the fact that they're keeping it in production should be looked upon as a victory for farming. Do you see the Wavecrest/Big Wave model of agriculture as being…

Let's try to keep on topic here. Fascism is off-topic.
I'm really interested in this question of the long-term fate of farming on the Coastside in the face of the fact that most of the farmland is no longer owned by farmers, and that the landowners are investors who are seeking the kind of return that leasing land for farming cannot supply.
