Unless you can produce evidence that someone knowingly said something false, accusations of lying are a violation of the civility rule.
I'm going to cut Dale some slack, because I should have bounced his comment and not released it as-is.

I chose "citizen" to describe the capacity in which Bob was commenting on the plan, as I described Scott Holmes in terms of his job as Public Works Director. As far as I know Bob was not speaking on behalf of the Sierra Club, so to describe him the way you suggest wouldn't be fair to either Bob or the organization. I linked to the story because I hoped people would read it for themselves. But in quoting, I tried to capture both the pros -- "win-win" and "paid for" -- as well as the cons --"growth…

The video will be up shortly.
I support either eliminating funding from all non-human entities (including PAC's, unions, and businesses) or limiting them to the same contribution as individuals.
What makes you think Grady isn't for reform? I believe he's for smaller limits than the other city council members, and for tightening the limits on multiple contributions by individuals.
I don't think I ever called Yee a grassroots candidate, although he was an underdog in San Mateo County.

So, if you believe that the tactics are equivalent, can I assume you're voting against Ms. Schreurs and Mr. Riemer?

Did I miss something? Is Jonathan Lundell running again? If I'm not mistaken, Lundell and the LCP put their names on Voice of the Coast. The issue is that Jolanda Schreurs and Kirk Riemer hid behind a nonexistent campaign committee that provided them with cover until the election was over. The ad was an anonymous, unanswerable, last-minute attack on Lundell's motives. Follow this link for Coastsider's original coverage and to read the ad that they refused to put their own names on: https://coastsider.com/index.php/site/news/277/…

Kevin mentions the BBC as a possible model. I think the Economist is an interesting example as well. It has a pretty consistently center-right point of view, but its journalism is exemplary.

A bad choice of words by the reporter. Note that it's not a quote. It should read “A high school journalism class was his only formal training.” I've working in the news business on and off for 20 years, starting at the Los Angeles Times in 1983, followed by The Mercury News and CNET's News.com. There are also four or five years of magazine publishing -- Architectural Digest, Motor Trend, Dr. Dobbs Journal and many others -- in there as well. I received no formal training, because I was typically…

Brian, you seem to be saying that the lack of evidence support from the LCP is prima facie evidence of LCP support. Since you can't buy space in the main section of Coastsider -- in fact I give it away all the time -- the in-kind value of the endorsement is approximately $0.00. Regarding Pam Fisher's qualifications, I think I'm on record as saying that the qualifications for this job are not especially demanding. The principal duties are those of any board of directors: oversight and not administration.…

What kind of support do you think she's getting from the LCP? I haven't heard anything about her from them.
Heck, I'd never even heard of Pam until she put her hat in the ring.

If you click on a user's name, you can get a couple of private communication options, if they haven't turned them off, and other info about posters.

This topic has touched a nerve. I've allowed some inflammatory language from both sides of this issue, but now is a good time to remind everyone to treat each other with respect.

It's hard to look at the following satellite photo and not believe that the riprap is not causing the destruction of the beach by redirecting the wave energy and preventing the natural erosion of the bluff.

Terry: Riprap destroys beaches as well as bluffs. Take a look at the beach in the Google satellite photo referenced above. You can see that the beach is being washed away by wave action directly in front of the riprap. Part of that beach is public property. Eventually there will be no beach at all. Should the property owner have to compensate the state for taking a beach? If the state won't allow riprap on the neighbors' property, it seems to me that they have a good civil case against their neighbor…

I would love to see more news and participation from Southcoast residents on Coastsider. If you have stories you'd like to work on, or even press releases you'd like to see on the site, please send them in and I'll work with you if you need help. As always, pictures to go with stories, or just interesting pictures by themselves are expecially welcome.

This is an interesting discussion that deserves its own topic. I've started a topic in Town Hall to discuss impact of gated communities on the Coastside.

What is the obligation of the person initiating the activity to inform his neighbors and the authorities of his plans? I'm not talking about legal requirements, but the requirments of simple neighborliness. The obligation of communication shouldn't fall on one side only. Recently one of my neighbors had a big wedding in the back yard. They left notes up and down the street letting us know what was coming and inviting us to the reception. Isn't that the way things are supposed to be done? The Property…

It's offensive and just plain bad manners to label a person in a way that they find insulting.
October 06, 2006
Is Nimby an insult? Would the person being called a Nimby or Nimbyite accept being labeled that way? If not, then it's likely to be an insult. The same thing applied to "no growther". For that reason, the words enviromentalist and developer aren't insults, although they can be used with that intention in some circles. Blogger falls into that category as well. I've tried to come up with a term in common use that has the same insulting intent as "Nimby" or "no growther", but without much luck. Developer…

The Big Wave case is interesting. The County halted the farming activity until the land's owner supported his claim that the change in use was permissible. It took the county a while to decide if this was correct. I'd argue that the lack of clarity, and the sensitivity of the site, made it justifiable to wait until the owner's claim could be checked out. In both the Big Wave and Wavecrest (2004) cases, the delays could have been avoided by talking to the authorities beforehand. I'd argue that Mr.…
