Film with a perspective on China any parent can appreciate.

The Coastside Film Society to screen:
    Last Train Home

"Last Train Home is the best kind of documentary filmmaking:  transportive cinema that takes viewers to a place they never much  considered, immersing them in experiences they never knew existed." Mike Scott, Times-Picayune

Last Train Home

Fri. August 5 at 8:00pm
Methodist Sanctuary, 777 Miramontes, Half Moon Bay, CA
Suggested adult donation: $8.00, children & students $3.00

The Chinese industrial revolution is fueled by the labor of hundreds of millions of Chinese workers who leave home and family to take jobs in the factories that circle the big cities. Most of these workers get a single vacation each year - during the week-long celebration of Chinese new years. The result is the world's largest human migration, a week when an unfathomable 130 million human souls cram into every available mode of transport to grab a week of family time. The shots of this mad migration at the beginning of the Last Train Home are majestic and overwhelming.

The bulk of the movie focuses on the life of one Chinese couple. Fifteen years ago Zhang & Chen left their young children in the care of grandma to take low-paying jobs in a factory a thousand miles away. They live in a dorm with no privacy, bent over sewing machines from dawn to dusk, to earn enough money to pay for a good education for their kids.  Canadian director Lixin Fan follows the family for three years as the now teenaged kids gradually detach from the life goals their parent have set for them.

"A film that tugs at your heartstrings, opens your eyes, and makes you feel incredibly lucky"  Times-Picayune

Professor Jenny Lau, a Chinese film scholar at San Francisco State, introduced the Film Society to this masterpiece and will handle introductions and handle post screening discussions.

LAFCo Community Response Requested by PMAC by Aug 3

Letter

By on Sun, July 31, 2011

At our most recent PMAC council meeting we had a presentation(submitted in writing) by Marta Poyatos, Executive Officer San Mateo LAFCo.  Recently I met with Martha to gain additional understanding and discuss where we go from here.

LAFCo/Martha is looking forward to a community response to the report.  I don’t need remind you a community response of this nature is most powerful if we are heard as one.  To that end I ask you to formulate your opinions and or factual responses and email to my attention ([email protected]).  I will work with PMAC council members to coordinate all submittals and formulate the “Community Response”.

As you read through LAFCo’s Pescadero statement you will see a myriad of issues.  If you prioritize those issues, CSA11’s water is at the top of the list.  As you read the report you will see why.

The deadline for submitting our document to LAFCo is August 5th.  We want Martha to have some time for review prior to her next appearance at PMAC, Tuesday, August 9th.  The 5th being our deadline to publish, we need your response no later than the end of the day Wednesday, August 3rd.

If you do not have a copy of LAFCo’s Pescadero statement it can be viewed at http://www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/portal/site/lafco.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Book Pays Tribute to Beloved Half Moon Bay Icon

Zenjo Press today announced the release of its new book, Peaceful Warrior: The Life of Ken Paul Lozada. Filled with beautiful photographs and sculpture dialogues, it explores the art and spirituality of the iconic creator of the gravity-defying tree sculptures standing guard at Main Street in Half Moon Bay, California.

Of those once drawn to Ken Paul Lozada's sculpture garden to get a closer look at pieces of wood he has given a new life with shiny, undulating lines, cavernous abysses, and chiseled squares, many found their initial interest giving way to a sense of wanting to know more about their creator. A biographical glimpse at the sculptor and author of The Seven Treasures of Life (as well as thousands of pages worth of soul messages), includes family photos spanning five geanerations.

A near-death experience after a car accident left Ken, who spent many years in an orphanage, with a new understanding about the gift of life which he has since sought to share with others--revealing his arboreal creations to be messengers about the sacred nature all humans possesses within. He has surrendered to complete honesty and openness, while becoming a conveyor of truth. His fragments of wood become symbols of restoration as these once-majestic trees that have been discarded get a new lease on life.

To find out more about Peaceful Warrior: Portrait of Ken Paul Lozada, to download a free book excerpt, or purchase a hardcover copy please visit publisher's website at www.zenjopress.com. Softcover editions are available at Ocean Books, H arbor Books & Gallery, and Bay Book Company. Book signings are scheduled for August 18th, 2011, at 7:00 PM at Cameron's Inn, and August 20th, 1:00 to 3:00 PM in Princeton Harbor's Books & Gallery.
