Devil’s Slide to be closed for four hours, Wednesday

March 24, 2010
Katy you can sign up for San Mateo County agency alerts by email and/or phone text, they will inform you of closures to roads/service, and a whole host of alerts/statuses for your use. You can choose for what areas (Montara, Moss Beach, HMB) and then specify tertiary things like schools, weather, etc... for those areas. Their website to enroll is here : https://www.smcalert.info/index.php?CCheck=1

Accident between car and cyclist has closed Hwy 1 southbound at Devil’s Slide

March 17, 2010
"Any word on how the bicyclist is doing?" Here you go... your updates can be found here: http://cad.chp.ca.gov/ but, perhaps you don't care if the car, after hitting a reckless cyclist (for the sake of assume, which I assume you are doing, as is Barry) swerved off the road. Unfortunate, but I sense a VERY suspicious rush to point out a traffic situation involving a cyclist/pedestrian.\ vs, the road just being closed. Granted, Coastsider has coverded 'some' roadside incidents... but the title choice…

Congresswoman Jackie Speier in Pacifica, Saturday

March 16, 2010
This should be interesting. I'm guessing she'll pull her best Ginger Rogers, dancing in synch with the "need" for health care reform, and sashaying skirting around the "way" Obamacare is being pushed by Congress. I'm curious where she REALLY stands on the current fiasco, and by that not that health care bill itself, but the ways it's being achieved via $100M+ kickbacks for a single vote, hiding/fudging the true costs and coverage, underhanded parliamentary rule exceptions to jam it in anyway/how…

Pacifica examines widening part of Hwy 1 to six lanes

March 15, 2010
The meeting is the first step to creating a Draft Environmental Impact Report. I'm curious if the draft EIR will include environmental impact of NOT widening the highway, given the pile of cars and trucks running on idle during the commute hours. That particular stretch of Hwy 1 is particularly unpleasant and potentially dangerous for pedestrians, including the patrons of the businesses on the east side of the highway. Unpleasant how? It's like driving through Moss Beach, frankly. And yes it's dangerous…

Consultants’ plan for Hwy 1 lacks awareness of our environment and community

March 11, 2010
An overpass will NEVER happen here. It reeks of growth, development, and an iota of suburbanization. Many here want to hold tight to no-growth-weed-ridden-squalor. Allow no infrastructure improvements, so any attempts at "progress" is denied for reasons given that we don't have the infrastructure to support it. In any case... traffic light systems roughly cost about that of a roundabout (pending any right-of-way aqcuisitions, though CalTrans pretty much has a wide swatch of easement up and down the…

MCTV MIA on tsunami: “No one called us”

March 01, 2010
Nevermind, I know the point. I'm not a big MCTV fan, and in fact, don't even get the channel... but you guys going after them publicly at every whim is getting beyond tiresome. If you have a point, make it. Otherwise, I believe MCTV exists to provide non-profits and government agencies to put on messages about meetings, events, including fundraising events, and PEG broadcasts. Besides, DishTV, DirectTV and Comcast are all already part of the EAS (Emergency Alert System) and can broadcast over any/every…

I'm not sure what the point of this article is.

Consultants’ plan for Hwy 1 lacks awareness of our environment and community

February 27, 2010
"An awareness of the history and character of our local communities. " Umm, you mean the part about unsafe crossings, weak infrastructure, NIMBYism to the hilt, scorn and lambast any and every agency that isn't 110% pro environmental, keep the weeds, hang on to ridiculous zongin and building specs that lead us to "maximum architecture", then debate and argue every detail for any/every sense of progress, so in the end...nothing gets done? ..that history? that character? Otherwise... please feel free…

County’s closed-door Mavericks “debrief” yields no news

February 24, 2010
Lotsa selective "journalism" on this: from "debrief", no I think it was a debrief. Lots of choice descriptors on this one. In the SMC Times we see Jeff Clark is salty-as-ever on MSV (spare me Jeff, you know you wouldn't of done a thing, much how to pull it off logistically) so I'll take his rhetoric for what it is. And Julia's usage of "some observers said" is right out of the Katie Couric playbook. A lot of other "observers" have said the opposite, including HMB Reviews informal poll that resulted…

Mavericks Surf Ventures passes the buck…

Annelise: Would that be Laguna Niguel, Laguna Beach, Laguana Canyon, Canyon Acres, El Niguel, or Niguel Woods. Or just plain Laguana. I know what you mean, but every time I'm down there, it's another new community with a new twist/instance/permutation on the name. Still a great place, BTW.

Imagine the traffic if/when there's a traffic light every 50 yards from Pescadero to Devil's Slide, and a 15MPH speed limit that some propose and want for near-perfect safety. The 14 families traveling to/from a children's book fair at El Granada Elementary would snarl traffic for hours, much less that 'disasterous' surfing cacauphony ;-)

Traffic and Trails - Report and next steps, Weds

February 22, 2010
Hey Len. The mprc site says Thursday Feb 24th. I assume their day is incorrect, and it is Wed the 24th.

Mavericks Surf Ventures passes the buck…

February 22, 2010
Eh, the traffic wasn't that bad. It's actually fun to observe all the hype and enjoyment of folks coming down to enjoy our area and our local businesses. Dream Machines is just as bad. 7 miles of crawling autos, fumes, 2 hour drive...etc... a few times a year, I can deal with it. The person most responsible for what happened was Mother Nature. Go after her, and don't ruin a great event with a litigious fest.

Why Supervisors should be elected by district In San Mateo County

February 04, 2010
* To run for supervisor a candidate must appeal to more voters than a candidate running for congress. * To reach one third of the electorate with one mailer (approximately 130,000 voters) costs at least $65,000 (i.e. $0.50 per mail piece). * The costs to run a credible campaign give incumbents an enormous advantage and as a result they are almost never seriously challenged. b. Consequences: * Non-white candidates rarely run and only one has been elected in the last 30 years. What the... why the race…

Why Supervisors should be elected by district In San Mateo County

February 04, 2010
"a. Facts: * Only 1 in 5 supervisorial elections have been competitive in the last 30 years. * There has not been a competitive supervisor election in San Mateo County for over 10 years. "Competitive" is a characterization/adjective /opinion, and not fact. Perhaps you could quantify what you mean by competitive. As Sgt Joe Friday remarked, "just the facts, ma'am".

SFPUC may ease recreational access to Crystal Springs Reservoir property

January 29, 2010
Obviously there's a little more involved than just unlocking a couple of gates, including but not limited to safety, access restrictions, changes to trailheads, etc. But this is a good start, being one of the "illegals" traversing the ridge in prior decades, the area between Sweeney/Lake Pilarcitos & CS Resevoir/Montara Mtn is sublime to say the least. I'm sure watershed impact will come to the forefort, especially with the equestrian question in tow. Curious if couldn't a POST buy the land? or foot…

Help save California: circulate petitions for the Majority Vote Initiative

January 27, 2010
John, this hardly a "most important initiative", vs. a power grab in it's finest hour. Reeks of Barney Frank complaining about the filibuster power in the House, when things don't go his way. Majority vote sounds good in theory, and it might be the right move. But it does provide a more open checkbook for the ruling faction. Making the checks and balances quite minute, vs. bi-partisan and vetted. The initiative requires the assumption that the state's current fiscal crisis is due to the minority…

Photo: Pacifica’s Nurdle Beach

January 27, 2010
For one, the ENTIRE beach wasn't covered. But drama is allowed in these parts. Second, the link to the alleged Garbage Patch is dead. Never mind, as it's the same patch that "scientists" claimed to sail out and observe as the size of Texas. Then they were called on it with satellite imagery, and later recanted with a "well... it's all broken up into small pieces and underneath the surface". That patch, a la global warming turned climate change.

Thunderstorms, Lightning & Road-Rocks

January 20, 2010
"Didn’t see anything at all… and Devil’s Slide was fine too." Actually, Devil's Slide had two incidents coming down on the Pacifica side circa 7:30-8:00. Both I can assume due to the sudden stop that ppl attempted coming around semi-blind curves into stopped traffic. The earlier one occurred at the San Pedro Terrace curve, the next one happened shortly thereafter on the curve before it as Slide traffic backed up due to the first. The stopped traffic was no different at 7:30 or 8:15, much less…

Rick Kowalczyk nominated Brian Ginna as his appointee on the HMB Parks & Rec Commission

January 20, 2010
"Such a polarizing person a surprising nomination for someone (Kowalcyk) who pledged to bridge the divide in the community." Anyone with an opinion on the coastside is "polarizing", moreover anyone with a minority opinion on local matters. Brian has stated his opinion on a number of matters, well outside the realm and/or affects of parks and recs, so I will take Joel's word on Brian's dedication in this arena. Mabye he can somehow/way help with our efforts getting Moss Beach Park a loo.
