San Mateo County one-day homeless census needs volunteers

Press release

By on Wed, January 12, 2011

On Thursday, January 27, 2011, the County of San Mateo Human Services Agency will conduct the biennial One Day Homeless Census and Survey. The census is a federal requirement which is also a key component of the HOPE ten-year plan to end homelessness, and will provide us with an increased understanding of both the number of homeless individuals and families in this county and their individual and collective needs.

Why is the PIT Count Important? Collecting good data on the number, characteristics, and service needs of individuals, families, and unaccompanied children experiencing homelessness is a critical component of local homeless planning and program development. Accurate data helps communities to:

  • Understand changes in trends among homeless populations;
  • Adjust the types of programs and services available according to need and use resources as efficiently as possible;
  • Justify requests for additional resources and/or programming modifications;
  • Comply with reporting requirements from HUD, other funders, and local stakeholders;
  • Raise public awareness about the issue of homelessness; and
  • Measure community progress towards preventing and ending homelessness.

Coastside training will be Wednesday, Jan 19, in Half Moon Bay:

Half Moon Village
Community Center
9 Bloom Lane

Saint Misbehavin’, Saturday

Press release

By on Tue, January 11, 2011

On Saturday, January 15, 2011, The Visionary Edge will present a fun and inspirating event to launch the 2011 film season.  The evening will begin with a catered organic raw food dinner at 6:00, a skype interview with Berkeley filmmaker Michelle Esrick at 7:30, followed by a sneak preview screening of Saint Misbehavin: The Wavy Gravy Movie.  All will take place at Community United Methodist Church in Half Moon Bay.

Wavy Gravy is more than just a popular Ben-and-Jerry’s ice cream flavor—it’s the name adopted by Hugh Romney, an iconic hippie prankster who has lived a particularly inspiring brand of idealism for half a century. He began as a poet in Greenwich Village, friend to Bob Dylan, Ken Kesey, and Tiny Tim, among others. From there he adopted a more comic persona, performing a kind of stand-up routine that provoked people to ask questions and care more deeply. A leader in what came to be the hippie movement, he eventually traveled across America with his freewheeling commune known as “The Hog Farm,” and often wore a jester costume, embracing the role of the fool in service of his ideals. He and his remarkable wife of 40 plus years, Jahanara, led a sort of security detail at Woodstock that included a kind of reenactment of the biblical feeding of the 5,000, and eventually took a remarkable trip across Europe and through Asia (including through countries like Afghanistan where a westerner would be unable to travel in the same way now), spreading an ethic of warmth and generosity wherever they went. One can’t help but compare the footage of that trip with how such a trip might look now; as Wavy Gravy puts it, “War is such a complicated way of getting to know people.”

Saturday January 15th, 2011 at Community United Methodist Church, 777 Miramontes Street (at Johnston), Half Moon Bay. Dinner payment must be received no later than Thursday at noon, January 13th. Suggested donation for the film portion of the evening is $12 advance, $16 door. No one turned away for lack of funds. Call 650-207-3440 for information and tickets.

Montara Residents Needed for Corral de Tiera Subcommittee

Letter

By on Tue, January 4, 2011

At our last MCC meeting on Dec 8 when the GGNRA presented information on Rancho Corral de Tiera (RCdT) there was a large group of residents from Clipper Ridge who were upset by the intrusion of the Coral Reef portal on their neighborhood. Surprisingly, there were none from Montara addressing the Le Conte Portal which will bring visitors right past Farallone View Elementary School.

Most of the local residents voiced concern about the affect on their neighborhood (traffic, parking, safety, etc) and the fact that the National Park Service (NPS) did not even try to include the local residents in the process. I am assuming that the lack of Montara people at the meeting was due to a lack of publicizing our meeting or they do not know about the NPS’s plans. I am now reaching out to the community to hear their opinions.

I would like to ask Montara residents and all coastsiders who actively want to help the MCC and NPS identify alternatives. I am in the process of setting up an ad hoc subcommittee to help organize residents who will be the most affected by the current plans and others concerned with better access for all. The working group can meet with the NPS and other organizations to help in planning the new park’s integration into our coastside community. The goal of the subcommittee is to help research alternative locations, communicate information to their neighbors, and provide feedback to the MCC and NPS.

Auto burglaries at Gazos State Beach and Pigeon Point Road, neighbors in dispute in Moss Beach, vandals break a home’s window in El Granada, vandals slash tires one car and dent another in Moss Beach, cars are vandalized in Moonridge, license plates stolen at Butano fire trail in Pescadero, a home is burglarized in Moss Beach, and this:

Deputies were dispatched to a report of a woman being thrown from a moving vehicle. Deputies contacted the female. She told the Deputies that she did not like the way the driver was driving so she jumped out of the vehicle. She was intoxicated and refused to tell the Deputies who the driver was or answer any of their questions. She was unable to care for her self and taken to a local hospital for medical attention and evaluation.
